Fibro-Pedic is billed as "The first mattress created just for Fibromyalgia suffers." Dr. Rick Swartzburg, a chiropractor from California, designed this hybrid latex and memory foam mattress for his wife, who has fibromyalgia. According to the Doctor, the key to a mattress helping a fibromyalgia sufferer is finding a balance between being soft and being firm.
Staring at the top, the Fibro-Pedic has a soft terry blend velour cover made from a cotton blend which is also stretchable, allowing it to conform to the sleeper's body without bunching.
The comfort layers of the Fibro-Pedic are memory foam and latex. Memory foam is there for its conformity, and latex for its resiliency. And these rest on a base layer. Each of these layers is 3" thick. Together they combine the benefits of a memory foam mattress and a latex mattress.
The top layer is 4-lb. memory foam. This was selected because it is responsive even when it is cold. This means that a user with fibromyalgia does not begin her (or his) sleeping session on a hard surface. The foam used by Relief-Mart is ventilated to keep it cool, not overheat as the first memory foam did.
The second layer is Talalay latex. Processed in the United States, this latex foam is called "composite." This is another way of saying this is a blend of natural and synthetic latex. This adds durability to the benefits of natural latex. As it is being processed, it is configured into three zones with more support for the lower back.
The support core of the Fibro-Pedic is a base of highly resilient polyurethane foam. This prevents bottoming out (a nightmare for someone with fibromyalgia).
A specialty sleep (non-coil) mattress needs solid support. Foundations providing that support are platform beds, solid-top box bases (such as the wood foundation sold by Relief-Mart), and adjustable beds.
