Relief-Mart is a manufacturer and distributor of products for the relief of pain. The Tri-Pedic is their first memory foam mattress. Selectabed was set up as a division of Relief-Mart to make and market mattresses, bedding and accessories.
The Tri-Pedic was introduced in 2005 as an improvment on the memory foam mattresses then on the market. Relief-Mart contracted Dr. Rick Swartzburg to assist in the design and testing of their mattresses. It is produced by Relief-Mart for relief of pain. They list "back pain, neck pain, arthritis, bursitis, [and] tendonitis" among the ailments addressed by this mattress. Added to this is the "need to get a better night's sleep." The original Tri-Pedic has been branched out into three models: Gold, Platinum and Diamond.
In its description of the Tri-Pedic, Relief-Mart calls it a "pressure-sensitive memory foam mattress." This distinction tells why the Tri-Pedic was developed.
Until then, 5-lb. memory foam was standard in the comfort layer of a memory foam mattress, as exemplified by Tempur-Pedic mattresses of that time. This foam is very temperature sensitive. This resulted in the mattress being too hard when the room was cool. Then, when the memory foam warmed up, the sleeper sank too far into it. Added to this was memory foam's tendency to build up heat and become too warm for comfortable sleep and resorative rest.
Relief-Mart addressed this issue by dividing the comfort section into two layers, with the firmer temperature sensitive 5-lb, 16 ILD memory foam under a layer of pressure sensitive 4-lb, 10 ILD memory foam. The lighter foam responds to the sleeper's body even when the mattress is cold. It also does not absorb as much heat, so it does not get too much softer.
A notable option for the Tri-Pedic is the patented Air-Flow Transfer System. This takes advantage of vertical pores in the memory foam carrying air down to the interface with the support core, The support core's top surface is convoluted to let this air flow out to and through the breathable borders of the mattress.
The support core of Tri-Pedic mattresses is very firm polyurethane foam. This is to provide underlying support for the sleeper and the mattress.
The three versions of the Tri-Pedic have the same 6" support core with a 2" layer of 5-lb, 16 ILD memory foam, but differ in the thicknesses of the 4-lb, 10 ILD memory foam comfort layer. Correspondingly, they also are compared to different Tempur-Pedic models (all in the Tempur-Cloud Collection).
The Gold Tri-Pedic, the firmest model, is 9" high. The 4-lb. memory foam layer is 1" thick, and it is compared to the Tempur-Pedic Cloud.
The Platinum Tri-Pedic is closest to the original Tri-Pedic. It has a 2" thick comfort layer of 4-lb. memory foam, bringing its overall height to 10 inches. The feel is called "Plush-Plush." Relief-Mart compares it to the Tempur-Cloud Supreme.
At 11" high, the Diamond is the highest Tri-Pedic version, as well as the plushest. It is compared to the Tempur-Cloud Luxe. The 4-lb. comfort layer is 3" high.
Relief-Mart stresses that its foams are made in America with strict controls on quality, in contrast with foams made overseas, and are certified as to content.
The covers of all Tri-Pedic matresses is Micro-Vented Kool-Flow™ fabric, a stretchable knit material that breathes. Relief-Mart says that this cover works as part of the Air-Flow System.
Sold by Relief-Mart through Selectabed, the Tri-Pedic mattresses are covered by a 30-year warranty (compared to 10-years for Tempur-Pedic models) and have a 120-Day Sleep Trial.
