The HealthRest Latex Collection of latex mattresses is one of two collections in the HealthRest line by Restonic. The other is the HealthRest TempaGel Collection of memory foam mattresses. This collection is not the same as the HealthRest Latex model of a few years ago. More than one model, it is now a full collection with several models.
The key features of mattresses in the HealthRest Latex Collection are Restonic Latex, Thermocool™ and Outlast® Technology.
Restonic Latex is 100% pure, natural latex, made from the sap of the Para rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis). Produced in South America or Southeast Asia, the sap (latex) is purified and cured into foam (formerly known as foam rubber) by one of two processes, Dunlop or Talalay. The newly cured foam is washed, removing any remaining proteins (it is the proteins in the sap which trigger latex allergies). Various materials can be added to latex in the process, such as gel or PCMs.
Latex is a highly resilient material. When it is compressed, it pushes back, like rubber. This is in contrast to heat-sensitive memory foam, which briefly "remembers" the shape of a sleeper's body. Unlike memory foam, latex has a quick, virtually instantaneous, response when weight is removed. This make it easy for a sleeper to change positions or get out of bed. No "sinking feeling" here.
Latex is anti-bacterial and anti-fungal. It also resists the harboring of allergens and allergen-bearing dust mites, making it hypoallergenic.
Other foams may be used in the comfort layers. Some models even add a layer of gel-infused memory foam.
Thermocool is Restonic's system for keeping temperatures in line. According to Restonic, Thermocool "Proactively regulates temperature so no more shivering or shucking blankets throughout the night; Reduces tossing and turning by maintaining a consistent, comfortable temperature; Keeps sheets, bedding and mattress fresher, longer."
One of the few widely available temperature regulating technologies, Outlast was developed for NASA to protect astronauts and sensitive equipment from extreme temperatures. Phase change materials (PCMs) are embedded in materials used for textiles and casings. PCMs change their physical state to keep the temperature within a desired range. At the top of the range solid PCMs liquify, absorbing alrge amounts of heat. At the bottom of the range liquid PCMs solidify, releasing large amounts of heat. Specially developed PCMs are used to finely tune the temperature range.
Current Restonic HealthRest Latex models are foam-core mattresses. At least a few have a foam core of high-density polyurethane foam. Described as an "eco-friendly" foam, it evidently has a significant percentage of plant-based oils in its composition. In some model descriptions the foam in the support core is not specified, leaving open the possibility that it may be a support-level latex (solid or foam).
In the HealthRest Latex Collection models where the cover material is specified, it is bamboo. According to Federal Trade Commission standards, if the bamboo is made into rayon, then "rayon" or "viscose" must be part of the description (such as "bamboo rayon" or "rayon from bamboo"). Since it is not, my conclusion is that this is bamboo fibers extracted in a process similar to extracting linen from flax stalks. Since bamboo is the only cover fiber named, the rest may also be bamboo.
Bamboo is a soft and long-lasting fiber, and is resistant to bacteria and molds. It also wicks moisture and is breathable, helping to keep the sleeping surface dry and cool.
Foam core mattresses need to rest on a flat, firm surface. They also need to be able to breathe. The standard fabric-covered wood platform foundation has slats 3" or less apart, supporting the foam while letting it breathe. These mattresses are also compatible with adjustable beds. European wood slats, slightly arched for a little springiness, are suitable if the slats are close enough. Old-style box springs are not suitable for foam beds (including latex). Some retailers "box springs" are not really box springs, but flat foundations.
HealthRest Latex Collection mattresses are widely available among several retailers. Several model names are used, sometimes depending on the retailers. A few of the model names associated with this collection are Caprina, Expressions and Natural Essence.
Most models in the HealthRest Latex Collection have a 15-year warranty from Restonic. Since Restonic is a cooperative of independent mattress manufacturers, warranties may vary somewhat across the country.
