Loom & Leaf was launched by Saatva in 2015 as its luxury memory foam mattress brand. The three original Saatva models are coil-on-coil innerspring mattresses. Saatva relies on a direct-to-customer marketing model, eliminating the costs associated with physical retail stores, for example selling for $899 a mattress that would sell for over $2,000 in a traditional retail store.
In Loom & Leaf, Saatva is applying this same strategy to memory foam mattresses. L&L mattresses are compared to Tempur-Pedic and iComfort models. Saatva Loom & Leaf says, "Our Loom & Leaf ultra-premium memory foam mattress is best compared to the quality level of iComfort and Tempur-Pedic®, however, our efficient online business model allows us to sell the L&L bed for a significantly lower price." The comparison chart puts side-by-side the specifications for Loom & Leaf's L&L Relaxed Firm and L&L Firm with those for the Tempur-Cloud Luxe Breeze, while an online market news site compared the L&L models with the Tempur-Contour Rhapsody Luxe.
The name Saatva is derived from the Sanskrit word for purity and truth. According to the company, Truth is in their marketing and Purity is in the mattresses themselves. In the Loom & Leaf Brand, Purity is found in the plant-based foams used in the mattresses. This bio-foam is made in the United States. Besides reducing use of petroleum and eliminating the resulting outgassing, this also removes the cost, hassle and concern over quality of importing foams. It also keeps the manufacturing jobs here.
The construction of the Loom & Leaf mattresses is a high density foam support core, a transition layer, a memory foam layer, and a gel layer, within an organic cotton cover.
The support core in either Loom & Leaf mattress is 5½" of high-density plant-based polyurethane foam. Its function is to be the foundation of the mattress, supporting the layers above it. It is almost half the 12" overall height of the mattress.
A 2" loft pad is the transition layer of the L&L Firm and L&L Relaxed Firm mattresses. Situated between the support core and the memory foam, this is intermediate in firmness to transition from the support of the core to the cushioning of the comfort layers.
The primary comfort layer is 2½" of memory foam. Like the support foam, this is also plant-based and American made. The role of the memory foam is to conform to the wieght and contours of a sleeper's body. This is to prevent pressure points and assure support of the lower back.
On top of this is what L&L calls an "Enhanced conforming and cooling" layer. This is 2" of 4-lb. "gel-swirl" memory foam. The swirling is for even distribution and effect. Gel enhances support and conducts heat away. Swirled liquid gel is used because studies cast doubt on the effectiveness of gel beads. This foam is also convoluted on the lower side, which allows for air flow. This is one of the oldest structural techniques for cooling a mattress, and it is still used by several manufacturers. To the gel swirl memory foam, Loom & Leaf also adds "an inverted foam tip" to increase air flow.
A gel spinal panel is laminated on the top (flat) side for lumbar support. This is medical grade gel, the same as used on hospital mattresses, especially in burn units. It both creates a "cool zone" and enhances support in a critical area.
The cover of Loom and Leaf's L&L Relaxed Firm and L&L Firm is circular knit organic cotton. It is knit for co-conformity with the memory foam, and the organic cotton is for its soft feel and purity. This cotton knit is quilted to ⅝" of quilting foam and an all-natural flame retardant of thistle fibers.
The only two models of memory foam mattresses with the Loom & Leaf name are from the firmer half of the firmness scale. According to Saatva Loom & Leaf, less firmness in a memory foam mattress makes it "too mushy." The actual numerical firmness levels of the L&L models indicate they are medium firm and very firm.
Both Loom & Leaf mattrersses are 12" high. With delivery and service contracts all over the country, the mattresses are delivered to and through the door and set up in place, all without rolling or folding the mattress into a box. The old mattress is removed.
Compatible foundations for Loom & Leaf mattresses are platform beds, slatted bases with slats no more than 3" apart, and adjustable beds.
The warranty on Loom and Leaf memory foam mattresses by Saatva is for 15 years, while that for Tempur-Pedic models is for ony 10 years.
