The Pastoral is an organic wool mattress made by Savvy Rest, a manufacturer of organic mattresses in Charlottesville, Virginia. This mattress differs from the company's latex mattresses in not having any latex. This makes the Pastoral acceptable for persons with latex allergies.
The filling of the Pastoral organic wool mattress is organic wool batting. This batting fills an organic cotton twill cover, and the mattress is tufted with organic linen thread. The entire mattress, from batting the wool to tufting, is handmade.
Wool is resilient. It does compact some, but can be refluffed. Regular flipping and rotating of the mattress can reduce compaction. Light in weight, the wool and the cotton together are breathable. Wool wicks moisture for driness and cooling. But it is also insulating. Therefore, wool is temperature neutral, working against extremes of temperature.
The ideal foundation for the Pastoral organic wool mattress is a solid foundation or a platform bed. However, since it is very flexible, it can be used on a futon. Using this mattress on an adjustable bed might be problematic, and a box spring is certainly out of the question. Savvy Rest suggests placing a bed rug over the foundation to help the Pastoral mattress to breathe while adding padding. The Pastoral is available through many Savvy Rest retailers. It carries a 30-day Limited Warranty. This warranty requires the use of a proper foundation, which excludes box springs.
