Sealy Brand Gel Memory Foam Series
There are three series in the
Sealy Brand collection by
Sealy:
Traditional Innerspring,
Gel Memory Foam and
Latex. The
Sealy Brand Gel Memory Foam Series features mattresses using
Sealy's gel-infused visco-elastic memory foam. This series has been known as the
Comfort Series Gel Memory Foam. until this latest brand revision. Some of the model names still apply.
According to
Sealy, prices in this series for a queen-sized mattress begin at $599. making them more affordable than most other brands of gel memory foam mattresses.
The signature feature of the
Gel Memory Foam Series is the gel-infused memory foam. This is, first of all, visco-elastic memory foam, first developed by NASA to cushion astronauts during extreme G-forces on lift-off. It was then further developed by
TempurPedic (now linked with
Sealy in
Tempur-Sealy International) for consumer use. Memory foam is now widely used for its property of conforming to the contours of a user's body. This provides even support for the whole body, eliminating pressure points which can become painful, interrupting rest. According to
Sealy, "This comforting, body-hugging quality creates the sense that your sleeping 'in' your mattress and not just 'on' it while at the same time helping to keep your body temperature within the optimum range for deep, relaxing, restorative sleep."
Memory foam, however, has a tendency to accumulate heat from sleepers' bodies, so it is then infused with gel, either in micro-encapsulated or liquid form. The gel acts as a heat sink, absorbing heat and conducting it away from the sleeping surface to where it can dissipate. This cools the surface, keeping it from getting too hot for comfortable sleep. Gel also adds some of its own support properties.
Underlying gel memory foam in the
Sealy Brand Gel Memory Foam Series is a layer of non-gel memory foam, somewhat firmer than the gel memory foam above. This is the principle of increasing support in underlying layers, which provides sure support without sacrificing comfort.
Under this layer of memory foam is the supporrt core. This is called
Polycore. It is a highly resilient block of foam, which is actually two or more layers of high density foam (hence the prefix "poly-"). One advertised benefit of the
Polycore is minimization of motion transfer.
Mattresses in the
Sealy Brand Gel Memory Foam Series can be purchased with standard (9") or low profile (5") box springs. Adjustable beds suitable for foam mattresses are also available.
