Sealy Posturepedic Gel Series

The Posturepedic Gel Series by Sealy combines the Sealy Posturpedic innerspring support system with the cool comfort of gel memory foam. Sealy does not label the Gel Series as hybrid mattresses, but with the relative height of the comfort layers and the support core, it qualifies.

Memory foam is known for its conformity to the shape of sleepers' bodies, and gel-infusion adds the supportive and cooling properties of gel. When someone lies on memory foam, the material responds to the heat and weight of the user to correspond to the shape of the body. This evens out support to all parts of the body, relieving pressure points. After the sleeper gets up, the memory foam returns to its original shape, thus the "memory" in the name.

By introducing gel beads into the memory foam, new properties are added. When the foam is almost fully compressed, the gel adds to the support, resisting bottoming out. But gel is better known for its cooling. It is a heat sink, absorbing heat and transferring it to where it can dissipate. This cools the sleeping surface of the mattress, making the sleeper(s) more comfortable.

The gel memory foam is next to the surface of the Sealy Posturepedic Gel Series mattresses. Other foams are used in the comfort layers of the mattress. These include hypersoft foam and ActiveFlex compressed foam padding. These soften the firm support of the innersprings to tailor the comfort level. These mattresses are either Plush or Firm.

The comfort of the Sealy Posturepedic Gel Series mattresses is enhances by the Aloft Quilt cover. The jersey knit fabric is quilted with various quilting materials (which ones depends on the model).

The key feature of all Posturepedic mattresses is the innerspring unit. In the Gel Series, this can be either the Apex™ Coil Design or Posturepedic® Classic DS Coil.

Apex uses two-stage coils. These coils are softer at the top and firmer at the bottom. This means that the intital reaction is soft, but firmness increases as the coil compresses, more so than with uniform gauge coils. This design allows the titanium alloy coils to conform more finely to the shape and weight of the sleeper. The Apex coils are individually encased, so that they respond independently without motion transfer. This minimizes the disturbance of one sleeper by a partner's movements.

The Posturepedic® Classic DS Coils made of lightweight and strong titanium alloy. They are very supportive and durable. Like the Apex coils, they are a two-stage design. Where they differ is in the arrangement.

Both Sealy Posturepedic Gel Series coil configurations concentrate more coils in the center third of the mattress for better lumbar support. This orthopedic configuration is to promote proper posture and spinal alignment. This is what Sealy calls the CoreSupport Center.

Sealy uses the SolidEdge™ HD System to support the edges and sleeping surface of the Posturepedic Gel Series mattresses. And the bottom of the mattress is protected and the sheets are held in place by the StayTight foundation cover. Sealy suggests use of their Reflexion Powerbase as the foundation for Sealy Posturepedic Gel Series mattresses. These mattresses are available in most standard sizes. They come with a 20-year limited warranty and a 100 night trial period. Several models are available, but the names vary according to the retailers.
