Dunlopillo is a line of mattresses designed by a British firm, produced and sold in North America by Sherwood Bedding Group. Here is part of the news announcement:
Sherwood Bedding has secured the license to manufacture and sell latex mattresses in North America under the internationally renowned British brand Dunlopillo. Founded in the 1920s, Dunlopillo has built a reputation for constant innovation in luxury latex beds and pillows, giving millions of people around the world a comfortable sleep. The design of Dunlopillo latex ensures undisturbed sleep by allowing for maximum breathability, essential for removing excess heat and moisture. Its hypoallergenic and anti-microbial qualities also provide a safe option for those who struggle with allergies. “We’re excited to take the name of this well-known brand and reintroduce it in North America,” said Neil Ellman, whose family founded and operates Sherwood Bedding. “For us, this is the perfect match, as both Sherwood Bedding and Dunlopillo offer superb products to ensure perfect sleeping.”
All Dunlopillo models made by Sherwood Bedding have not only latex in the mattresses, but moisture-wicking Tencel fibers in the covers to keep the sleeping surface dry and cool.
The North American editions of Dunlopillo latex mattresses are in three groups: Harbor Series, Ambiance Series, and Retreat Series. Each series is distinguished by particular combinations of features.
Common to the five Harbor Series latex mattresses is the support core of two 3˝" high blocks of upholstery-grade convoluted foam (polyurethane). This "super high density" base foam is soy-based. The convolutions allow surface give and air circulation, while the extra density makes it extremely supportive. Under this is a base pad of high-density support foam, not quite as firm, for absorbing shock.
Each model in the Harbor Series has a single layer of natural Talalay latex, made from sap of the rubber tree. Latex is resitant to mildew, microbes and dust mites. It is also hypoallergenic, since allergy-causing proteins are washed away in the post-cure rinse. Latex is used in bedding because of its resilience, the bounce of rubber.
The cover fabrics of Harbor Series mattresses contain Lycra for 4-way stretchability. This lets the fabric align with the flexing of the foam layers beneath. All the models in this line have organic cotton ticking with border fabrics of chenille.
Models in the Ambience Series of Sherwood Dunlopillo mattresses have only one 3˝" layer of super high density soy-based upholstery-grade convoluted polyurethane foam. However, this series adds a thick layer of graphite-infused natural Talalay latex. The long graphite fibers modify the support a bit, but their chief role is conduction of heat to stabilize the temperature of the mattress.
Also in Ambiance mattresses is Natural Celsion. This material from Latex International is natural latex with the addition of phase change materials (PCMs) for temperature regulation.
Ambience also adds Max Breeze Technology to the covers. Max Breeze includes PCMs to regulate the temperature, keeping it within a desirable range: as Goldilocks would say, "Not too hot, and not too cold."
Sherwood Bedding's Retreat Series mattresses have the graphite latex, Celsion and Max Breeze of the Ambiance Series models and the double support core of the Harbor Series. To this is added a 3" layer of natural Talalay latex. With the three Retreat models labeled Jumbo Pillow Top, Luxury Firm Euro Top, and Luxury Plush Euro Top, Sherwood calls mattresses in this series "Ultra Luxury Bedding." They claim for these mattresses a "Balanced level of Support and Deep Comfort."
The various models within each series are differentiated by the number, thickness and firmness of the foam layers. Harbor Series, with 5 models, has the widest ranges of overall comfort levels and mattress heights.
Mattresses in the Dunlopillo Line carry Sherwood Bedding Group's 20-year limited warranty. These mattresses are found at several retailers around the country, though most retailers do not carry all the models.
