Shifman Masters Collection
The
Shifman Masters Collection is one of four mattress collections produced by
Shifman Mattress Company (in addition to those made exclusively for Bloomingdale's). The
Masters Collection has at least 14 models (11 of which are exclusive to one dealer).
Shifman describes their
Masters Collection as a "line of handmade, two-sided luxury mattresses that include the finest materials and methods available." The features cited are in both the mattresses and the box springs. Briefly, these are natural materials, high-profile innerspring, hand-tufting, 8-way hand-tied boxsprings, "Firma Edge" edge support system, and elegant finishing.
The natural materials in the
Shifman Masters Collection include cotton felt, latex foam, premium grade fabrics, and pashmina cashmere. According to Shifman, a mattress in this collection can include "up to 83 pounds of cotton." Though these are innerspring beds, this is a lot in the comfort layers. The descriptions of some of these models say the cotton felt is used for temperature control, providing "a natural cooling effect in summer and warming effect in winter."
The several comfort layers in the
Shifman Masters Collection mattresses are anchored together with hand-tied tufting. This is to keep the layers from shifting or bunching. Shifman's patented Sanotuft technique is used in tufting the mattresses, This produces a "smooth, buttonless tuft."
The
Masters Collection's high profile innerspring coils are double offset for what Shifman claims makes the innerspring more responsive to the weight and shape of the sleeper's body. The coil count of these 12-13 gauge springs in a queen-size mattress is over 400.
Shifman's "Firma Edge" support system for the edge of the mattress makes use of high-density foam and supports made of heavy-gauge steel. This both strengthens edges and maximizes the sleeping area.
As to "Elegant Finishing," Shifman boasts of fine, high quality fabrics, both American and European. Added to these are "handcrafted finishing touches that are intricate and decorative." This include handles which are embroidered and hand-stitched to the border. The final touch is solid brass corner guards.
At the bottom is the box spring. The 9-gauge steel coils are hand-tied in a 8-way fashion. The box spring has steel edge support.
According to one retailer, the mattresses in the
Shifman Masters Collection carry a 10-Year limited warranty.
Several retailers carry
Shifman Masters Collection mattresses. Some describe individual models online, while others invite the consumer to come in to see and test the mattresses for themselves. The prices of these mattresses are markedly lower than those of another hand-made mattress manufacturer.
