For generations, Shifman Mattress Company has made the box spring foundations for their two-sided mattresses, both innerspring mattresses and latex mattresses. These box springs are made by hand and matched to each matttress. Shifman points out the advantages of box springs for their mattresses.
Meanwhile, the popularity of platform beds has been rising, thanks in part to the increase in all-foam and pocket coil mattresses. Retailers carrying Shifman products and their customers have been wanting Shifman mattresses for platform beds. Among the comments is this one: "I appreciate their efforts to convince me of the merits of having a box spring, but I have a platform bed with just a mattress and have never slept better."
Now Shifman has made a shift. An April 2015 Shifman blog article is headlined, "Platform Bed Owners, Rejoice: Shifman Debuts New Line Of Luxury Mattresses For Platform Beds." The article explains that platform beds are hard on regular mattresses, especially one-sided models. It goes on to say that two-sided mattresses, such as those made by Shifman, last longer on platform beds than the no-flip models.
The new mattresses by Shifman are specifically designed to work on platform beds. They will be available in three firmness levels. The company avoids direct criticism of polyurethane foam and memory foam, but they stress the durability of the natural materials they use: cotton, latex and wool.
Like other Shifman mattresses, those made for platform beds are hand-crafted. The ingredients used are steel for the springs and natural materials. The mattresses are also hand-tufted for increased stability and durability.
The new Shifman Mattress Company models dsigned for platform beds were exhibited at the Spring 2015 High Point Furniture Market. A mutual advantage for the retailers and for Shifman is that these new models, such as the Willow, can be displayed on platform beds already on the floor, saving space for the retailer and leading to sales for both mattress and bed.
The warranties for platform bed mattresses are expected to be the same as Shifman warranties for similar models.
