The Pure Comfort Collection was introduced by Shifman Mattress Company in 2010 as Shifman's first line of models which are not innerspring mattresses. Instead of coils, latex supplies the support. At first, the Pure Comfort mattresses were one-sided. Then in 2013, in keeping with the company's philosophy, Shifman introduced the new models as two-sided latex mattresses.
The principal feature of a Pure Comfort mattress is the 7½" to 10" support core of pure natural latex foam. According to Shifman, this is "among the highest quantity of latex foam available in the industry." Latex is well-known for its resiliency (remember that it is also called "foam rubber"). The natural conformity of latex foam relieves pressure on joints, a common barrier to quality sleep. It is also resistant to mold and bacteria and is hypoallergenic.
Natural latex, made from rubber tree sap, has been used by Shifman for a long time alongside other natural materials such as cotton, wool, silk and cashmere. Not using synthetic foams, such as memory foam or polyurethane, avoids the problems associated with them. Even when a synthetic foam uses plant-based oils, this is usually only ¼ or less of the oils used; the rest are derived from petroleum, meaning that there will be some off-gassing, even with extensive airing out.
Natural materials also include the wood and Italian twine used in the foundations. The hand-made box springs with 8-way hand-tied coils are specifically designed to support latex mattresses. Pure Comfort Collection models can be used with platform beds and adjustable beds, but the warranty is ½ as long if they are not used with the paired boxspring. The reason is that even a very firm box spring acts as a shock absorber for the mattress, and many mattresses do not last as long on a non-resilient surface.
The warranty Shifman has on Pure Comfort mattresses is for 10 years.
