Sleep Science 10" Athena

The Sleep Science 10" Athena Mattress is the second of South Bay International's 10" mattresses, the other being the Emma. Mattress Distributors, a Canadian firm, says that the Athena is a replacement for the Emma. The primary differences are the grade of foam and the quality of the cover. South Bay International lists the 10" Athena Mattress under the Advanced Sleep Technologies brand, and that's the brand used for it by Home Click, Lighting Universe, and Comforpedic.net, while Sears uses "South Bay International," and Mattress Distributors uses "Sleep Science."

The first thing the user encounters with the 10" Athena Mattress is the polyester jacquard knit mattress cover. It is stretchable to follow the form-fitting memory foam as the sleeper lies on it, and it is removeable and washable.

The top layer of the Athena is 3 inches of 3.5-lb. visco-elastic memory foam. Many consumers are now familiar with the property of memory foam of conforming to the shape and weight of users. With the 3.5-lb. memory foam, the 10" Athena is rated as medium plush. The conformity of the memory foam provides relief fro pressure sores. For side sleepers it keeps the spine in line to reduce the incidence of backaches.

The memory foam is contained on all sides by South Bay International's patented Wedge Edge Support System. This is a 3"x3" triangular wedge of heavy, dense support foam which runs along the entire perimeter of the memory foam layer. Another property of memory foam is that it tends to allow the body heat of the sleeper to build up. The are several ways that manufacturers use to disperse this heat so the foam can cool. The 10-inch Athena has a 2" Air Comfort Layer. The foam of this layer is an "open-cell" structure, in which the larger cell size allows air to flow though the foam, conducting heat away from the memory foam.

The 5" bottom layer of the 10" Athena is polyurethane with high resistance. While the memory foam conforms to the user, the base layer provides necessary support, keeping the layers above from sagging. Not only is this better for the sleeper, it also extends the useful lifetime of the mattress.

South Bay International's Sleep Science (Advanced Sleep Technologies) 10" Athena mattress is available through various online and local retailers, including those named above and others. It is a low-priced mattress, made in China in a plant owned and operated by South Bay International. It carries a 20-year limited warranty.
