Sleep Science 13" Ariana
The Sleep Science 13" Ariana is the middle of the three mattress models of the South Bay International brand Advanced Sleep Technologies (AST). The other two are the 10" Athena and the 14.5" Elegante. Sleep Science's comfort rating for the Ariana is plush pillowtop.
Sleep Science boasts of more than 6 inches of "premium visco memory foam." This begins with the 3" pillowtop layer, with 5-lb. visco-elastic memory foam. The foam in this pillowtop is laminated to make it plush. This detail is not given in any of the descriptions, but other manufacturers quilt their laminated layers, which gives them stability while increasing plushness.
Just under the pillowtop is a 35/8" layer of 5-lb. memory foam. The primary function of memory foam is conforming to the shape of the user's body. The intended result is for the head, shoulder and hips of sleepers to be softly cradled. This main memory foam layer is held in by a triangular rim of highly dense support foam. This is called the Wedge Edge-to-Edge Support System, which is patented by South Bay International.
Immediately below the memory foam is the 3/8" Air Comfort Layer of open cell latex foam. This foam is formed with bubbles larger than most other foams, permitting air to filter through this layer to conduct body heat, which has been accumulated by the memory foam, to the edge of the mattress and out, thereby cooling the sleepers.
The bottom layer of the Sleep Science 13" Ariana is a 7-inch Air Channel Base. This polyurethane foam layer is cut both lengthwise and across with 1" deep channels, furthering the air flow and cooling of the matress. The polyurethane is highly resilient to support the sleepers, balancing support and plushness.
The Sleep Science AST 13" Ariana is wrapped in a removeable, washable polyester stretch knit cover.
The Sleep Science 13" Ariana is made in China and comes with a 20-year limited waranty against manufacturer's defects. It is sold through several online retail outlets.
