Sleep Science 14.5" Elegante
Sleep Science (South Bay International) lists the 14.5 Elegante under its Advanced Sleep Technologies (AST) brand. It is sold by Costco as the Sleep Science 14.5" Escape, by Sears as the South Bay International 14.5 in. Elegante, by Lightning Universe as Advanced Sleep Technologies Elegante, and by Home Click as the Sleep Science Elegante 14.5" Mattress. It is also sold by several other online retailers, including Comforpedic.net.
At 14.5 inches, the Elegante is the highest of the AST brand mattresses, as well as the plushest, an ultra-plush pillowtop. It features a half-inch thick quilted mattress cover and two weights of memory foam upon a channel cut polyurethane base.
There are two layers of memory foam in the 141/2" Elegante mattress. The 2-inch top layer is 5-lb. visco-elastic memory foam. The 3-inch second layer is 7-lb. visco memory foam. The conformity of the memory foam to the sleeper's body shape and weight is graduated, with the lower layer providing more support. The intent is for the mattress to be plush, not mush, by tempering the give of the foam.
These layers are supported at the edge by the Sleep Science Wedge edge-to-edge support system. This is a 5"x5" triangular wedge encompassing the entire perimeter of the memory foam layers, keeping it from spreading out. This way, the entire surface of the mattress can be used, such as sitting on the edge. This support also is to guard against the memory foam breaking down, thus prolonging the life of the mattress.
Memory foam has a tendency to accumulate the users' body heat, a trait not endearing in the summer. The Sleep Science answer to this is the channel-cut Air Channel Base. This is 9 inches thick resilient polyurethane with dual density and dual IFD (indentation force deflection). 1-inch channels are cut into the surface of the base in a criss-cross manner. This allows air to floow along the bottom side of the memory foam, cooling it and the sleepers.
The Sleep Science 14.5-inch Elegante Mattress has a quilted-top mattress cover, a 1/2-inch of added softness with the quilting foam. The top fabric is a bamboo blend, which has a reputation of durability, breathability, moisture wicking, and resistance to microbes and dust mites.
The Elegante is in the medium price range for mattresses in general, low-priced for a high, ultra-plush mattress. It carries a 20-year limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
