The Sleep Science 9" Latex GL is the second of two latex mattresses by South Bay International sold under the Sleep Science brand by Costco. It has not yet been listed by other retailers, online or in stores. This mattress differs from the other latex model, the Sleep Science 9" Natural Latex, in not having all-natural interior materials. The GL is also not as simple, having more layers with greater variety.
The 5" support core of the 9" Latex GL is high density base foam infused with soy (this sounds like polyurethane foam partially composed of soy oil polyols). The role of this base foam is underlying support for the whole mattress, keeping less firm layers above from bottoming out.
On this support base are three Talalay latex layers. The top layer, 1" thick, is infused with Celsion phase change materials, (PCMs). The PCMs regulate temperature by changing their physical state at the top and bottom ends of a temperature range, absorbing heat to keep it from being too warm, or releasing heat to keep it from being too cool. The latex in this layer offers resilient pressure relief.
The second and third layers of the 9" Latex GL are also Talalay latex. The 1" second layer is less firm than the 2" third layer: 19 ILD vs. 24 ILD. This tapers the transition from the more conforming top comfort layer to the very firm support core. The resulting overall comfort level of the mattress is Medium to Soft.
The composition of the fabric in the cover is not listed, but it could be the same as in the 9" Natural Latex, a blend of cotton, polyester and spandex. The composition of the fire resistant layer is not given either, but this model does meet federal flammability standards.
A specialty sleep (non-coil) mattress such as the Sleep Science 9" Latex GL requires a foundation with a firm, flat surface. This excludes old-style box springs. Compatible foundations include adjustable beds (such as the Sleep Science Motion Trend), European wood slats (if the slats are close enough), solid-top wood bases, and platform beds.
The Sleep Science 9" Latex GL mattress is covered by a 20-year limited warranty from South Bay International. So far it is listed only by Costco, but it may appear in the future under the Advanced Sleep Technologies label at retailers of Blissful Nights mattresses.
