Except for the relative thicknesses of the top and third comfort layers, the Sleep Science Carina 11" Gel Memory Foam Mattress is the same as the Blissful Nights Violet. Both are made by South Bay International, but the Sleep Science mattress is sold exclusively at Costco. It is billed as a "Gel Infused Visco and Latex Specialty Mattress," which can be classified as a hybrid of memory foam mattress and latex mattress.
The construction of the Carina consists of three comfort layers and a high density support core. The 2" top layer is gel-infused memory foam, followed by 2" of memory foam, then 1" of ventilated Talalay latex. The support core is scored on the top for air flow.
The cover of the Sleep Science Carina has a white high-loft knit top panel and beige sides. The top is zippered for removal and washing.
The top layer of the Carina is 2" of 3-lb. memory foam infused with gel (in the Violet this is only 1" high). The gel is for keeping the memory foam cool by absorbing heat.
The second layer is 2" of 4-lb. memory foam. Just a bit firmer, it is still conforming for the purpose of support for the spine and pressure relief for large joints.
These two layers are encircled by the 4" x 4" Wedge Edge foam encasement. This supplies perimeter support to the memory foam and edge support to the top surface.
The Talalay latex layer is 1" high (it is 2" in the Violet). Latex is more resilient than memory foam, providing more support to the sleepers. It also helps in cooling the memory foam since air flows through it.
The support core is labeled the Air Channel Base. A grid of airflow channels about 2" deep is cut into the top of this 6" layer of extra firm polyurethane foam. This allows air inside the mattress to be exchanged with outside air through the permeable border (side panels) of the cover.
Costco shows the Carina 11" mattress on an adjustable bed, the Sleep Science Adjustable Base (Motion Trend). Other suitable foundations include platform beds and solid surface box bases (not box springs).
The Sleep Science Carina 11" Gel Memory Foam Mattress is covered by South Bay International's 20-year limited warranty.
