The highest South Bay International mattress model currently listed by Costco under the Sleep Science label is the Escape 14.5" Luxury Memory Foam Mattress. It has the highest density memory foam of any Sleep Science memory foam mattress as well as the thickest support core in this collection. Four components in the Sleep Science Escape add up to its 14½" height: the quilted cover, 2" and 3" memory foam layers, and a 9" support base. It also comes with a different foundation recommendation.
The quilted cover of the Escape is called "luxurious." The three-layers on top begin with bamboo fabric. This does not specify whether this is rayon made from bamboo or fibers extracted from bamboo (a process similar to producing linen), but FTC regulations require bamboo rayon to be identified as such, so these must be extracted fibers, which can be very fine and silky. The fabric is actually a blend of bamboo (40%), nylon (40%) and polyester (20%). This top panel is a pillow top channel quilted to an inch of quilting foam. Compressed by quilting, this accounts for ½" of the overall height.
The side panels are microsuede. Microsuede is made of extremely fine polyester fibers.
The 2" top comfort layer is 7-lb. memory foam, the heaviest memory foam used in South Bay International mattresses. Memory foam conforms to body contours to relieve pressure on large joints. This foam is less conforming and more resilient, meaning that the user does not sink into it as far.
More conformity comes from the second comfort layer, 3" of 5-lb. memory foam. This increases pressure relief and support for the lower back.
Like other Sleep Science models, the Escape Memory Foam Mattress uses the South Bay Wedge Edge foam encasement for edge support. The extra dense foam rail has a wedge-shaped cross section.
The support base of the Sleep Science Escape is a 9" high core of polyurethane foam. It is relief cut on the top surface in a grid of air channels. This lets air circulate into, through and out of the mattress interior, intended to keep it cool and fresh.
Costco pairs all the other Sleep Science mattresses to the Sleep Science Adjustable Base, also called Motion Trend. But the Escape 14.5" Luxury Memory Foam Mattress is paired with the Sleep Science Folding Bed Foundation. Why? The higher mattress, especially with the 9" support core, does not perform as well with the articulation of an adjustable bed as lower models. Besides the folding foundation (which has the advantage of being easier to bring through a house and into a bedroom), the Escape will work on a platform bed.
South Bay International covers the Sleep Science Escape with a 20-year limited warranty.
