The Sleep Science Marina 10" Memory Foam Mattress is made by South Bay International. Like all memory foam mattresses under the Sleep Science brand, it is sold exclusively though Costco (South Bay does sell mattresses elsewhere branded Blissful Nights and Advanced Sleep Technologies).
With a 5+2+3 configuration, the Marina 10" is like the 10" Athena formerly listed by Costco. The principal point of difference between the two models is that Sleep Science has added phase change materials (PCMs) and gel-infusion to the top layer of memory foam. This makes the Marina a new Sleep Science 10" model, since the current Sleep Science 10" Memory Foam Mattress is more like the Athena (which itself replaced the Emma).
The fabric in the top panel of the cover of the Marina 10" mattress is not identified in descriptions, but from the close-up photo it is evidently a jacquard or damask. Like on most other Sleep Science models, it is zippered so it can be taken off and washed.
The support base of the Sleep Science Marina 10" Memory Foam Mattress is a 5" thick layer of very firm, highly dense, resilient foam. This provides overall support for the mattress.
The 2" middle layer of the Marina 10" is South Bay International's Air Comfort Foam. This large open-cell foam is ventilated and contoured to promote air flow through the interior of the mattress, primarily for cooling. This helps the memory foam above it to dissipate heat in order to not become too warm for comfortable sleep. Many people do not experience quality sleep when excessively warm.
The signature feature of the Sleep Science Marina 10" is the combination of gel-infusion and phase change materials in the 3" high top layer of memory foam. While the gel enhances support in the conforming visco-elastic memory foam, it is also there for cooling. Gel initially absorbs heat from the sleepers. This gel is infused throughout the memory foam.
Phase change materials (PCMs) are introduced into the memory foam by a process called surface infusion. This keeps the PCMs close to the sleeping surface, where they are most effective in regulating temperature. Temperature regulation is accomplished by absorbing heat when the temperature is at the top of the designated range, and releasing heat when the temperature reached the bottom of the range. PCMs absorb or release heat in large quantities at these points by changing their physical state.
The top layer of the Sleep Science Marina 10" Memory Foam Mattress is surrounded by South Bay's 3" x 3" Wedge Edge. The Wedge is perimeter support for the memory foam and edge support for the sleeping surface.
On Costco, the Marina 10" Memory Foam Mattress is displayed by itself and on an adjustable bed, the Sleep Science Adjustable Base, which is the Motion Trend made by South Bay International. The Marina is also compatible other foundations, such as platform beds and solid-top divans (or wood-framed bases). Old style box springs are not recommended for memory foam mattresses.
The warranty on the Marina 10" is for 20 years.
