At least four mattress models by Southerland Bedding which are gel pillowtop mattresses. Representing at least three different collections they are the Trenton Firm Pillow Top, Forte Super Pillow Top, Kimball Firm Pillow Top, and Edison Plush Pillow Top. All are innserspring mattresses. Kimball has offset coils, and the other three have pocket coils.
Each of these Southerland models has a pillow top and a top comfort layer of gel memory foam. They range in height from the Forte's estimated 12½" to 14½" for the Edison. Two of these models are Firm and two are Plush.
The pillowtop is a separately contained section on top of the comfort layers. It consists of the top panel of the cover quilted to layers of padding. In Southerland mattresses, this padding is foam which Southerland makes themselves or has made under contract to their specifications. They chose to use foam instead of fiber for quilting because it keeps it cushioning effect longer. The cover also has a fire resistant layer.
The gel memory foam is memory foam infused with micro-beads of gel (a.k.a. micro-gel). Memory foam conforms to contours of a sleeper's body to support the entire body evenly. This takes pressure off larger parts, such as hips and shoulders, and provides needed support to recessed parts such as the lower back. Gel makes the memory foam more supportive, especially when the foam is compressed.
Ordinary memory foam tends to accumulate heat and become too hot, so this memory foam has the now-common open-cell structure which allows air to filter through the foam for cooling. In addition, the gel conducts heat away to where it can dissipate.
This firm pillowtop mattress is 13¼" high. One retailer lists the height as 22¼", but this is for a set, including the 9" high Southland Home Foundation. The innerspring of individually wrapped pocket coils has a coil count of 672, the same as in the Edison. Each coil responds independently to pressure
The innerspring is girded by foam encasement which helps keep the individual coils in place and supplies edge support to the sleeping surface. The other innersprings are also foam encased.
Other foam fills in between the gel memory foam and the pocket coils. An insulator pad or isolation sheet is not mentioned in the description, but one is usually placed between the coils and the foam to protect the foam.
Like the Trenton, the Edison Plush Pillow Top has 672 pocket coils in Queen size. This 14½" model differs from the Trenton in being Plush instead of Firm. This is partly due to the additional ¾" of foam.
This plush pillowtop mattress has 800 individually wrapped pocket coils. Gauges of the coils is not given for any of the pocket coil models, so we do not know if the higher coil density means lighter gauge coils or just smaller diameters. The higher density does mean a finer degree of conformity in the Southerland Forte, even through intervening foam layers.
As with the other models, the Forte has a top layer of gel memory foam just below the pillowtop for conforming support and cooling.
The Kimball Firm Pillow Top Mattress differs from the other gel pillowtop Southerland models in being supported by offset coils. These LFK varity of offsets use Alternating Coil Techology to make the support more stable. Since the coils alternate in their rotation, the innerspring as a whole does not tend to lean in one direction. Offset (Karr) coils are more conforming than Bonnell coils and continuous coils, but less so than pocket (Marshall) coils. Like the pocket coil models, the Kimball has foam encasement for edge support.
Under the Kimball's innerspring is a comfort pad, a layer of very firm foam which acts as a shock absorber.
The Kimball is 13¾" high, the second highest of these four models, but it is Firm. This is partially accounted for by the offest coils, and partly by firmer foams.
Southerland supplies two foundations for these pillowtop/gel foam mattresses: the House Foundation and the Ultra Flex Foundation. The House is a platform, and the the Ultra Flex is a cross between a box spring and a platform. These mattresses are also compatible with adjustable beds.
Southerland mattresses generally bear 10-year non-prorated warranties, but one retailer lists a warranty of 15 years for the Forte Super Pillow Top. This retailer also has a 120-day 100% Satisfaction Guarantee (trial period). Both the description and the warranty seem to indicate that this is an older model.

Will never buy from this manufacture again! BUYER BEWARE! Don't make the same mistake I did.
Mattress Rating: Mattress Comfort:There is a pit in the middle, it's all sunk in after 4 months. It's so cheap and I feel like I got ripped off. It cost me 1399.00 for this mattress and I can't believe how fast it broke down.
Mattress Durability:none at all broke down after 4 months.
Mattress Support:none unless laying on a box spring is considered support.
Mattress Features and Benefits as Advertised:The salesman said that southerland would stand behind their product and they have not. It's a lot of promises and not at all what was sold to me.
Quality:very poor quality.
