Spring Air Sleep Sense

Introduced in 2013 as the newest collection in the Back Supporter series of innerspring mattresses by Spring Air, Sleep Sense is now a collection of its own on the Spring Air website.

The hallmark of the Sleep Sense Hybrid Plus Series is the high-low design of the 850-count pocket-coil innerspring. The coils are lower under three areas (or zones) of the body: shoulders, hips and knees. As can be seen in the illustration below, this reduces pressure on the shoulders and hips, while the higher coils support the rest of the body. The effect is to keep the spine straight. The third low zone means that the same benefit applies if the head and foot of the mattress are reversed. The same principle is applied in the newest Sleep Sense series, BioMax. Here the coils are replaced with a polyurethane foam core which has the same high and low areas as the pocket coil innerspring in the other Sleep Sense collections.

Sleep Sense Hi-Low Design

Covers of the Sleep Sense models feature silver-infused fabric. The silver hinders bacterial growth. It also reduces static by not letting electrical charges build up. This four-way stretch knit is quilted with a fire barrier, gel-infused quilting foam, and super soft foam.

The comfort layers of Sleep Sense mattresses include gel-infused memory foam and latex. The gel in the memory foam is to enhance the foam's support and pressure-relief properties while conducting heat away from the surface. Latex foam is very resilient and breathable. At the bottom of the comfort layers is a layer of Motion-Reducing Foam to minimize partner disturbance.

Other ingredients are used, depending on the individual model. Some of these are gel-infused latex, memory foam (without the gel), and Spring Air's Conforma Foam.

Besides the four BioMax mattresses some of the other current models are Series II, Series III, and Series IV. Sleep Sense mattresses range up to 18" in height.

The foundations Spring Air offers are wood-surfaced, steel-framed platforms (for BioMax models these are all-wood platforms). They are available in two heights: 9" Standard and 5" Low Profile. Compatiblity with adjustable beds was not mentioned on either Spring Air's or retailers' sites, so if you are considering using one with your Sleep Sense mattress, first ask.

Sleep Sense mattresses carry the 20-year non-prorated Spring Air warranty.

Update 2015:

At the January 2015 Las Vegas Market, Spring Air introduced an expanded specialty sleep series of several models with layers of latex, memory foam and gel in various configurations. The covers are zippered and not quilted. The borders have a different look than those on the Sleep Sense innerspring models, making a distinct visual impression. According to Spring Air representatives, the goal of the new Sleep Sense lineup is to provide a greater range of options for retailers. Since all Spring Air mattresses are produced under license, model details can vary, depending on the actual manufacturer and its arrangements with retailers.
