Supple-Pedic and Lever-Bed

logo-on-left-2

The Supple-Pedic line of mattresses by Strobel Organic Mattresses (Strobel Technologies) has an innovative support system. This is a layer of levers beneath the top comfort layer which have a teeter-totter effect. This works together with the comfort layer, made of Strobel's Polyfilax (an elastic foam).

Strobel Technologies developed the Lever-Support System to balance support. The goal is to support recessed areas of the body, the same aim of pocket coils and memory foam. Lever units are made of spring wire. Each unit is shaped like a ladder with rungs 6" to 8" long and a center post. It goes across beneath the sleeper. When weight pushes down on one end of the rungs, the other end pushes up. This way a lager body part helps support a smaller one nearby. For instance, the hips help support the lumbar.

Polyfilax is a thermally sensitive elastic foam. Strobel says, "Polyfilax is a unique and proprietary formulation of a plastic memory copolymer material." Heat from the body softens that portion of the foam, allowing it to conform to body contours. This is to relieve pressure. It acts similarly to the NASA foam from which memory foam was developed. How it works with the Lever-Support System is that both contribute to an even distribution of support. Here is where Supple-Pedic gets the "supple" part of the name.

Strobel Organic Mattresses shows seven models of Supple-Pedic mattresses on its website. They are Lever-Bed 750, Lever-Bed 600, Lever-Bed 450, Lever-Bed 300, Supple-Pedic 6000, Supple-Pedic 4500, and Supple-Pedic 3000.

As with Strobel waterbeds, more details of each model are given on retailer websites, such as Wayfair and EcoMattress Store. I take the manufacturer's listing to be more representative than exhaustive, as it is with several other manufacturers, since the retailers do list a few additional models which may be a little more recent. For instance, EcoMattress shows the Supple Latex Lever Bed 900, which seems, by the name, to be a later model than the Lever-Bed 750, and EcoMattress has a Supple-Pedic 9000.

Looking at the prices, it is apparent that these mattresses are not cheap. Strobel explains that the materials themselves are not cheap. If the Polyfilax and other foams are plant-based instead of being mostly made of petroleum derivatives, that would be understandable.

Most of the Supple-Pedic and Lever-Bed mattresses are not too high. Most of them are 8½" for the mattress. Greater overall heights on retail listings usually combine the height of the mattress with that of the foundation. Mattresses that really are higher have pillow tops or Euro (box) tops.

Strobel also sells mattress toppers (overlay pads). These are 1½" and 3" thick. Ingredients for these include memory foam, latex foam, and polyester fiber.

Strobel Organic Mattresses covers its Supple-Pedic beds with 30-year limited manufacturers warranties.
