Symbol Mattress Company's linked-coil innerspring mattresses are found in the Traditional Series. This collection consists of four component series: Lotus, Heartland, Shelton and Cavalier. Each of these has two or three models of differing comfort levels and heights. The one thing all of these have in common is foam-encased offset coil innerspring support units. All have polyurethane foam layers for comfort and support moderation. Some also have gel for cooling. All Traditional Series models are in the lower price categories, making them an affordable choice for most consumers.
Lotus, the highest level group of Traditional Series mattresses has Lura Flex coils. This is the trade name of LFK coils made by the Bedding Components division of Leggett & Platt. These are open-ended offset coils with a cylindical shape.
The rest of the Traditional Series groups are supported by VertiCoils, another type of offset coil made by Bedding Components. These are also cylindrical, but have fewer turns and wider heads than the Lura Flex LFK coils. They are less expensive than Lura Flex, which is reflected in the prices of these models. Leggett & Platt says that VertiCoils have consistent support.
Each innerspring unit of models in the Symbol Mattress Traditional Series is encased by support grade polyurethane foam on six sides: 4" on the right and left, head and foot, 1" on the top and bottom. In a construction description, the bottom foam is called a base layer (or pad), and the top foam an insulator pad. The foam encasement serves as edge support for the sleeping surface. The innerspring may have a perimeter rod, but this is not identified in descriptions, so it maybe it doesn't, though perimeter rods are found around most linked coil innerspring units.
Polyurethane foam constitutes the foam encasement of Tradition Series innerspring units. It is also found elsewhere. It is in the Symbol Quilt Foam and the comfort foams. In some mattresses, such as the Cavalier models, this includes convoluted Symbol Foam. The use of convoluted foam is to increase conformity without using memory foam. Convolution also fosters airflow for cooling.
In the higher two groups of Traditional Series mattresses, the foam in at least one comfort layer is infused with gel beads. This enhances support properties of the foam, making it more fluid-like. At the same time, gel acts as a heat sink to keep the foam from getting too warm.
The covers of mattresses in the Symbol Traditional Series are a white knit material quilted to high loft fire resistant fibers and Symbol Quilt Foam. The quilting foam is described as "super soft" or "hyper soft."
Heights of Traditional Series mattresses begin at 9" for the two Cavalier tight top models. The highest models are 14" high or higher (the Heartland Pillowtop is 14"). Cavalier mattresses are the Traditional Series models most widely available.
The warranty on Traditional Series mattresses, at 5 years, is shorter than that for other Symbol Mattress models.
