The newest mattress model (or series, if you prefer) by Italian mattress manufacturer Technogel is Vive [VEE-vuh]. As a series, Vive includes a mattress and a choice among three pillows: Classic, Deluxe and Anatomic.
As the other Technogel mattresses, Vive has an entire top layer of Technogel gel with a "tower" pattern of box-shaped protrusions on the surface. The towers make the gel layer more conforming by individualizing support for each small portion of the body.
With a price to match, Vive has more gel than the older models (Piacere, Armonia, Solievo and Estasi+), "the thickest layer of body-conforming gel ever featured in a mattress"–up to 90 pounds (the earlier models have up to 85 pounds). Semi-liquid ("soft solid") gel provides fluid support, with lateral as well as vertical displacement. According to Technogel, this gel is designed specifically for certain support properties, in other words not just simply crushing down under body weight. Their descriptions remind me of the advantages of a waterbed, because it adapts to any body size and weight. Gel has the advantage over a waterbed of less weight and no spills or leaks.
In Vive, it's not just the gel. Under the Technogel layer is a layer of latex and a support core of "high quality" foam. These are designed to shape support for the spine. According to Technogel, the support foam is pre-crushed to make it firmer. This goes along with the practice by some companies of compressing materials to break them in so that the feel is the same at first as it will be later on.
The cover of the Technogel Vive mattress is zippered for easy removal and cleaning. The fabric is Tencel, made by precipitation from suspended wood fibers, and is more natural than rayon (it is classified as a type of rayon). However, since Tencel does not readily take dyes, this natural origin may be offset by the use of chemicals to make it absorb dyes.
Technogel's accessories include a gel lumbar support. Vive is compatible with adjustable beds and wood foundations. It is covered by Technogel's 10-year waranty. Vive mattresses for the United States are made here with Technogel produced in Italy.
