The Essence is a memory foam mattress by Tempflow. This is a Medium Firm 9" model featuring Tempflow's Biogreen Memory Foam. It brings the number of 9-inch Tempflow mattresses to five. The others of this size are Harmonia, Selene, Gaia and Flexia. Essence is comparable to the Tempur-Contour Supreme by Tempur-Pedic.
The cover of the Essence is Kool-Flow™, a vented microsuede knit. A type of polyester, this material is breathable and conforming. It is also hypoallergenic. This cover is zippered so it can be removed for washing.
The prime feature of the Essence is the 2" high top layer of Biogreen™ memory foam. The company claims that this memory foam is free of cetain harmful substances, such as boric acid, bromides, PBDE, and TDI. This Biogreen is billed as a "3rd generation" version. The claim is that it has "13 times" lower VOC emissions than those required for several certifications. This is 5-lb. visco-elastic foam, which the company calls SD for "Superior Density." It is vertically ventilated for airflow to keep the top cool.
As part of Tempflow's Essence Layering System, the next layer is 1" of what Tempflow calls SD Firm-Flex™. This is polyurethane foam (called "hybrid polyurethane"), billed as "ultra responsive." It is also ventilated. This is firmer than the memory foam above, transitioning support to the extra firm base support core.
The 6" support core of the Essence consists of highly resilient high-density polyurethane foam. The top surface of this base foam is cross-cut with air channels which enable air flowing vertically through the top two layers to flow in and out through the breathable borders of the cover. The goal is to maximize cooling in the mattress, offsetting the tendency of memory foam to build up heat.
Memory foam mattresses need sure, firm support. Tempflow has their own box base, the True Platform Foundation, framed in wood with a solid, hard top, and upholstered to match the mattress. This foundation is optional. Other foundations meeting the requirements of the Essence are adjustable beds (Tempflow sells several major brands) and platform beds.
In comparison to the Tempur-Contour Supreme, the Essence has a longer warranty (30 years vs. 10) and a longer sleep trial (120 nights vs. 90). It also has both vertical and horizontal airflow, which the TP model does not. And the Essence's memory foam is GreenGuard tested, unlike the Contour Supreme's.
