TEMPUR-Flex Prima

The entry-level model in the new TEMPUR-Flex Collection by the original manufacturer of memory foam mattresses, TEMPUR-Pedic, is the TEMPUR-Flex Prima. What makes it different from the other two initial models in this series of hybrid mattresses is the height of the TEMPUR-ES in the Comfort Layer, 1½" shorter than in the TEMPUR-Flex Supreme and 2½" shorter than in the TEMPUR-Flex Elite. It has the same high-loft stretch knit cover, quickly adapting memory foam Response Layer, and wrapped pocket coil Dynamic Support Layer. This makes the Prima firmer than Elite and Supreme, while at the same time more quickly adjusting–"lightest TEMPUR-Adapt"–than the higher models.

T-Flex cover detail

The high-loft top cover has two layers of super stretch-knit fabric. Called the SmartClimate System, the upper fabric has fibers to wick moisture away from the surface. TEMPUR-Pedic says the lower fabric gives the cover its "cool-to-the-touch comfort" feel. The washable EasyRefresh Top Cover is removable, with a 360° zipper, for cleaning.

The Comfort Layer in the TEMPUR-Flex Prima is made of TEMPUR-ES, an extra soft memory foam (TEMPUR material). This foam conforms to body contours to distribute support evenly along the whole body to relieve pressure on the shoulders and hips while holding the lower back in line. The ES foam has the longer memory asscociated with memory foam, so it adjusts more slowly to changes in a sleeper's position. This is why having less of this material allows the mattress as a whole to respond more quickly.

Beneath the Comfort Layer is the Response Layer of TEMPUR-Response material. TEMPUR-Response has a shorter memory, meaning it responds faster to a sleeper's movements. This is to avoid the "sunk-in" feeling and ridges which make sleep less restful. The comforming nature of this memory foam provides pressure relief and spine support.

The Dynamic Support Layer is composed of wrapped pocket coils (Precision Coils) with a foam encasement. The pocket coils are densely packed in what TEMPUR-Pedic claims is twice the number of coils. A pocket coil responds to weight independently of the other coils providing pressure relief (this is why they were invented by James Marshall). The coils add a springy feel familiar to users of innerspring mattresses. Under this is a base pad of base support foam to protect the coils from below. The foam encasement not only protects the coils from the side; it is also edge support for the sleeping surface.

All three of these layers (Comfort, Response, Dynamic Support) work together for pressure relief and spinal support. They also isolate motion so it is not transferred from one side of the mattress to the other, minimizing partner disturbance, another cause of sleep interruption.

TEMPUR-Pedic provides four foundations for use with the TEMPUR-Flex Prima: TEMPUR-Flat Foundation, TEMPUR-Up™ Foundation, TEMPUR-Ergo™ Plus Adjustable Base, and TEMPUR-Ergo™ Premiere Adjustable Base.

TEMPUR-Flat is a platform box to give solid support for the TEMPUR-Flex Prima (traditional box springs are not suitable for this type of mattress). It is available in a choice of heights: Standard (9"), Low Profile (5") or Super Low Profile (2").

Tempur-Flat Foundation Tempur-Up Foundation

TEMPUR-Up is an adjustable bed in which only the head can be raised. Considered as an upgrade from the TEMPUR-Flat Foundation, it is powered by a quiet motor and operated with a wired remote control. The head can be elevated in a virtually infinite number of positions from just enough for comfortable sleeping up to 65° for sitting.

Tempur-Ergo Plus Tempur-Ergo Premier

TEMPUR-Ergo™ Plus and TEMPUR-Ergo™ Premiere are fully adjustable beds with several extra features.

The TEMPUR-Flex Prima can be found at several retailers, in stores and online. It has a 90-Night Tryout (sleep trial period) and is covered with TEMPUR-Pedic's 10-Year Limited Warranty (non-prorated).
