The Alder

The Alder is a Plush Offset-coil model made by Parklane Mattress, a bedding manufacturer in the Portland, Oregon, suburb of Beaverton. It is a 15" high innerspring mattress with coils in the support core and various comfort layers above. Its signature feature is a "coil-on-coil design: the comfort layers include a micro-coil layer.

The principal support for Parklane Mattress's The Alder is a 500-count offset coil innerspring. With this type of innerspring, an entire row of coils is made from a single wire. Since each coil is connected to one at the top and another at the bottom, it is called "offset." Traditional Bonnell coils are connected in a grid at both the top and the bottom, therefore when one coil is compressed, it pulls down four others. With offset coils, each pair of coils can respond independently from adjacent pairs, thus conforming support to the shape of a user's body. The main benefit of this is orthopedic spinal support.

Beneath the offset-coil innerspring is a base layer of 2" thick, high-density, soy-based foam. This stabilizes the innerspring and the whole mattress. It also serves as a buffer between the mattress and the foundation.

The micro-coil layer in The Alder is made of very small pocket coils, which move independently. The role of this layer is to relieve pressure points. Because of their small size and density (coil count of 1300), they smooth out the innerspring support. Foam encasement stabilizes this layer while providing edge support for the mattress as a whole.

Above the micro-coil layer are two layers of cotton felt and a layer of gel-infused memory foam. This distinguishes The Alder from a similar Parklane Mattress model, The Lovejoy, which uses Talalay latex. In The Alder, the 4-lb. gel foam yields both cooling and enhanced conforming support.

Parklane Mattress makes a wood slat foundation for use with its mattresses, including The Alder. The flexible slats have the resilience of springs without the metal. They are made of wood harvested from North American forests, a renewable, sustainable resource.

The Parklane Mattress warranty for The Alder is their 25-year Platinum. For the full 25 years, there is no charge for repairs or replacement.
