The Archetype and
The Archetype Pillowtop are the
WJ Southard innerspring models. These mattresses are made by hand using the same materials and processes that WJ Southard used in 1929. Mr. Southard avoided mass produced mattresses made by machine.
The materials used in
The Archetype models are: recycled steel, organic cotton batting, wool blend batting, and organic cotton fabric - and in the Pillowtop, botanical latex.
The heart of the
Archetype mattresses is the innerspring core. The coils (460 in queen size) are offset, which balances the support, prohibiting roll-together and minimizing motion transfer. The offset arrangement (alternating right-turn and left-turn coils) also automatically adjusts to the body shape and weight of the sleeper(s). These coils are made with 14 gauge steel, which is 95% recycled.
Above the innerspring unit of
The Archetype is a layer of organic cotton batting. This is somewhat thick, weighing 65 ounces per square yard. The cotton is grown and carded in Texas and New Mexico. No pesticides or herbicides are used in its cultivation, therefore there are no harmful chemical residues.
Atop the cotton batting of the
The Archetype is the wool batting, 20 oz. per sq. yd. This is wool from different sheep breeds, blended to provide the desired propeties. The wool controls moisture by wicking it away from the sleeper(s). It also makes the sleeping surface more breathable. The wool also contributes to the organic nature of the mattress because it is a natural fire retardant. This negates the need for flame resisting chemicals and synthetic fire barriers.
The mattress is covered with organic cotton fabric. This cotton, same as that in the batting, is woven in North Carolina and South Carolina.
In the Pillowtop version of
The Archetype there is a 3" layer of botanical latex between the cover and the wool batting. The latex is ventilated vertically to encourage air flow. It has layers of bound wool above it and below. The latex layer is to produce a softer, more cradling feel without compromising support.
The
Archetype models, like all WJ Southard mattresses, has a 25 year prorated, limited warranty.
