The Belmont

The Belmont is a Marshall Coil mattress made by Parklane Mattreses of Beaverton, Oregon (a Portland suburb). The top-of-the-line Marshall Coil model, it is one of three models featuring Marshall microcoils—the other three models use full-sized coils. Besides the microcoils, The Belmont has two latex layers and a foam support core. So rather than being an innerspring mattress, it is better classified as a micro-coil enhanced latex mattress.

What are Marshall coils? Marshall coils were invented by a Mr. Marshall and patented in 1900 in Canada. They are more commonly known as "pocketed coils" or "individually wrapped coils." Each coil is wrapped in a fabric pocket, and the pockets are sewn to each other in an array. The advantage of this is the independent response of each coil. This lets the coil array conform to the body contours of the sleeper. It also cancels motion transfer, what Parklane calls "chain reaction of movement," so one sleeper's movements do not disturb the other sleeper. The conformability of Marshall coils makes them suitable for most sleeping positions.

Most innerspring coils are 6 to 8 inches high. Microcoils, introduced about three or four years ago, are usually between 1" and 2" tall. They are also made of finer wire than the larger coils and have fewer turns. Thus microcoils are more easily compressed for a softer effect. But since they are narrower, there are many more coils in a layer of microcoils than in the traditional innerspring. This higher coil count provides support. Because these are individual coils, they are flexible horizontally as well as vertically. Microcoils can constitute comfort layers: a layer can be closer to the sleepng surface than a primary support innerspring. When used in combination with a traditional innerspring, the configuration is called "coil-on-coil."

In The Belmont by Parklane Mattresses, microcoils form 2 comfort layers, alternating with latex. With 1,300 coils in each layer, the overall coil count is 2,600. Using two microcoil layers means more pressure relief and less motion transfer.

The 2" support core of The Belmont is a high-density soy-based foam. Most foam support cores are thicker, but the Marshall microcoils contribute to the support. Using soy-derived polyols in the foam decreases dependence on petroleum.

Two of the comfort layers are made of Talatech®, Parklane's Talalay latex. Talalay latex is highly resilient and flexible, more durable than dunlop process latex, hypoallergenic, anti-microbial, and resistant to dustmites and fungus. It is also less liable to body impressions than memory foam. It is also cooler.

Parklane Mattresses supplies a wood-slat foundation for The Belmont. This is preferable over traditional box springs since this model has a foam support core. These foundations are made of wood from North American forests. They have 14 slats. According to Parklane, these are the strongest for the mattress industry. Two heights areavailable: 9" Standard of 4" Low Profile.

The warranty on The Belmont is Parklane's 25-year Platinum. The Belmont is a newer version of the former Nehalem mattress.
