The Cazenovian Natural Latex Mattress
The Cazenovian Natural Latex Mattress and The Cazenovian Natural Latex Pillowtop Mattress are two of the WJ Southard latex mattress models. WJS began producing latex mattresses in the 1950s. The company says the Cazenovian is "Like the latex mattress that we made for your grandparents. Pure and simple. Nothing fancy. Just a good solid organic mattress built with six inches of natural latex inside of a quilted cover made with organic cotton, and a blend of organic and pure wool."

The materials used in The Cazenovian Natural Latex models are: botanical latex, organic cotton/wool batting, and organic cotton fabric.

The heart of the Cazenovian mattresses is the 6" core of "natural" botanical latex. WJS calls two of their materials - cotton and latex - "botanical" because they are produced by plants. I use it here with latex to emphasize that this latex is totally made from rubber tree sap, not from petrochemicals.

Above the latex core of The Cazenovian is a layer of batting made by blending organic cotton with pure wool. This weighs about 20 ounces per square yard. The cotton is grown and carded in Texas and New Mexico without pesticides or herbicides, so there are no harmful chemical residues. And the wool is a blending of wool from different sheep breeds. This is to provide certain desired properties. Wool wicks moisture away from the sleepers' bodies, keeping them dry. It is also breathable. Being a natural fire retardant, wool keeps the mattress organic, eliminating the need for flame resisting chemicals and synthetic fire barriers.

The cover is organic cotton fabric, grown in New Mexico and Texas and woven in the Carolinas.

The Cazenovian Natural Latex Pillowtop Mattress adds a 3-inch layer of soft botanical latex atop the cotton-wool batting. The vertically ventilated latex (with layers of bound wool above and below) is to produce a softer, more cradling feel without compromising support.

The Cazenovian models, like all WJ Southard mattresses, have a 25 year prorated, limited warranty.
