BackSense
The BackSense brand by Therapedic is a collection of innerspring mattresses. Therapedic calls this brand "BackSense" because of the "HourGlass feature," an hourglass-shaped zone with additional firmness to provide greater support for the shoulders, lumbar, and hips. The goal of this design is to maintain proper spinal alignment. Therapedic is not alone in providing more support in these areas, but their "HourGlass" design is unique.

The coils in the innerspring support core are of a patented design. They are engineered to react to the weight of a sleeper's body by increasing support as the pressure increases. These are open springs, able to respond individually to the shape and weight of the users.

Perimeter support of the coil unit is provided by a foam encasement called Therafoam. this encasement also serves as edge support for the whole mattress, allowing the entire sleeping surface to be usable.

The innerspring unit is topped with a layer of polyurethane insulation foam in four of the Therapedic BackSense models, and with firm foam base in the two high-end models. The cover fabric is quilted with two foams, one soft and the other firm. It is in the comfort layer and the quilting that the BackSense models differ.

Therapedic International lists six models on its website: Brighton, Oxford, Waterford, Sussex, Covington, Manchester. A survey of retailers, though, shows variance in the numbers and names of the models. Also, the retailers usually have sale prices much lower than those on the Therapedic site.

All BackSense models but the entry-level model carry a 10-year warranty. The Brighton's warranty is 5 years.
