Therawrap Collection

The Therawrap Collection, introduced in 2010, is the first line of mattresses by Therapedic International to utilize pocketed coils, otherwise known as "wrapped coils." Therapedic says, "Each coil is individually wrapped in a high quality, high density, and breathable fabric." Two of the benefits they cite are comforming support and reduced motion transfer.

Individually wrapped (pocketed) coils are free to respond to immediately direct pressure from a point on the sleeper's body. Mattress manufacturers using this technology do so because this allows the innerspring core to more accurately correspond to the shapes and weights of sleepers.

Since each coil responds individually, it does not pull down the ones next to it. Thus the innerspring coils do not transfer one sleeper's motion, such as getting in/out of bed or turning over, to the other. Therapedic says that motion transfer is "reduced," not eliminated, because other factors, such as padding, foam layers, and the cover, do transfer some motion. The Therawrap coil units are foam encased to keep the pocketed coils in place, and also serve as edge support for the mattresses.

Speaking about other layers, Therapedic adds "extra comfort layers" of foams (polyurethane, memory foam, latex) and micro-coils for cushioning and conformity. The composition of these layers defines the separate models in this collection.

The Therapedic Therawrap Collection is two collections in one: Therawrap® With Gel and the original Therawrap® Collection. Therawrap® With Gel has four models, and the original Therawrap® Collection five.

Therawrap® With Gel - This collection is like the original Therawrap® Collection, but with the addition of gel memory foam. Gel memory foam, which is now used by most mattress makers, is memory foam infused with gel. There are many configurations of gel-foam, depending on the kind and form of gel and how it is infused into the memory foam. Therapedic uses "gel-swirl viscoelastic foam," where liquid gel is swirled into the components of the visco-elastic foam just before it is cured. The Therapedic gel memory foam has an open-cell configuration to permit movement of air and moisture to keep the sleeping surface cool and dry.

The four Therawrap® With Gel models are Abigail, Chloe, Emma and Sophie. The first three have a layer of convoluted foam immediately atop the innerspring support core. This foam is firm in Abigail, but plush in Chloe and Emma. Instead of convoluted foam, Sophie uses high-density foam and adds a layer of foam encased pocketed micro-coils.

The layer of gel-swirl memory foam in Therawrap® With Gel mattresses is just above the first foam layer. This gel-foam is 11/2" high in Abigail, and 2" in the others. This gel layer is just under the quilted top in all but Sophie, which adds a 1" layer of latex foam.

In all of these models, the cover is quilted with an inch of heavy quilting foam. The three higher mattresses add a half inch of polyurethane quilt foam. The fabric is Belgium stretch knit made by Lava.

Therawrap® Collection - This, the original 2010 collection, has five models: Daniela, Ashley, Kara, Marina and Rebecca. As described above, the main support is the wrapped coil innerspring unit.

Each of these mattresses features a quilted cover of Belgian stretch knit and various quilting foams. Beneath these quilts are comfort layers. Daniela's is simplest, one layer of plush foam. The next three models have a Eurotop layer, composition depending on the model: Ashley SuperSoft foam, Kara memory foam, and Marina natural latex. Rebecca, the high-end model, has a pocketed micro-coil layer with 1353 coils (in Queen size). Below these layers is the "supportive comfort foam" like the one in Daniela. Each of the mattresses ia entirely foam encased.

The prices listed for the Therawrap mattresses are for sets, not mattress only. The expectation is that the customer will buy the foundation with the mattress. Therapedic does list foundations for use by its hospitality customers: "The foundation is what supports the mattress and acts as a shock absorber for the primary mattress. Therapedic offers both wood frame and foam design foundations, as well as wood and steel box springs." And they also recommend their wood foundation for use with the PureTouch latex models. These foundations are available though Therapedic retailers.
