Most of us know someone with it. Some of us are afflicted with it. Others of us will be diagnosed with it. It is Parkinson's, a progressive condition with varying degrees of debilitation. Some of the recognizable symptoms are trembling hands and difficulty in coordination. Other symptoms may not be easily seen by others, such as restless leg syndrome, night sweats, stiffness in sleep, and incontinence.
With the help of healthcare professionals, Thomashilfen designed a Thevo Mobility therapy mattress to help persons with Parkinson's sleep well. ThevoCalm is the Thomashilfen mattress for Parkinson's care. It is distributed in the United States by Thomashilfen North America.
Each of the conditions addressed by a Thevo Mobility therapy mattress affects sleep differently, so in each of these mattresses, support is tailored for these special needs. Persons with Parkinson's need more stability, so the ThevoCalm is engineered to be firmer overall.
Beginning at the bottom, the carbon fiber shock absorbing Parkinson Suspension mounts are firmer than the mounts in most other Thevo models. While some give a "soft" response, in ThevoCalm it is "firm" support.
Though not stated in descriptions, the firmness of the underlying support of the Wing Suspension system is likely also firmer in ThevoCalm. This indicates that the stiffness of this component in each Thevo mattress model likely varies to address specific needs.
As to Parkinson's, Thomashilfen states some benefits of the ThevoCalm: Muscle relaxation by the MiS Micro-Stimulation of the Wing Suspension; mobility maintainance via tiny movements in the system; reduced sweating at night; and greater ease in changing position or sitting up. Incontinence is listed as a symptom of Parkinson's, but it was not addressed in the listed benefits.
Above the suspensions is the "mattress" layer of very firm foam. This foam with a proprietary formulation has relief cuts for flexibility and conformity, and air channels for ventilation and cooling. The flexibility makes the mattress more compatible with articulation of hospital beds. The conformity relieves pressure on joints.
Two covers are available for the ThevoCalm: Jersey knit and Incontinence. Both are breathable and can be removed for washing. The Incontinence cover can be cleaned by wiping it with a disinfectant.
My mother could have used a ThevoCalm mattress; she had Parkinson's. Several well-known people also have Parkinson's. One is Shay Healy, the Irish musician who won the 1980 European Song Contest. Diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2004, he found relief in 2014 on a ThevoCalm, testimony that this therapy mattress does work for some.
Available in several countries around the world, the ThevoCalm is covered by a Thomashilfen warranty: lifetime for the suspension, 10 years for the foam and cover. It also comes in two weight capacity versions, up to 176 pounds and 177-308 pounds.
