Tobia Natural Sleep Tubes
The
Tobia Natural Sleep Tubes 7-Zone Mattress is the middle model of the current
Spaldin Sleep Systems lineup of
mattresses. In retail listings, the
Tobia Tubes, like the middle child, seems to be the forgotten one (in August 2014, an online search revealed listing by only one retailer). But this innovative
mattress is worthy of description because it shows the innovative thinking and interest in following natural patterns by engineers at
Spaldin/
Tobia.
As can be seen in the illustration above, the support core has vertically standing 8" high
foam tubes. This is quite firm and also allows a large amount of airflow. According to the CEO of
Spaldin, the idea for the tubes came from the hexagonal design of honeycombs and hornets' and wasps' nests. This same mimicry is also used in the engineering of
Spaldin foams to make them more supportive as well as cooler.
The support core of the
Tobia Natural Sleep Tubes Mattress is organized into seven zones of differing resiliencies to tailor support for areas of the sleepers' bodies. The
polyurethane tubes are self-standing and are held in place by foam encasement around the edge and base foams above and below. They respond independently to relieve pressure and dampen motion transfer.
The comfort layer of the
Tobia Natural Sleep Tubes 7-Zone Mattress is
Spaldin's own
memory foam, which uses plant-derived polyols in its composition. In combination with the surface layer of soft foam, it moderates the firmness of the tubes somewhat, making it comfortable for some people, yet still too firm for others. This is just a reminder that comfort is relative to the user's own personal needs and preferences, including
sleeping positions.
The
Tobia Natural Sleep Tubes 7-Zone Mattress is very
affordable. The recommended
foundations are
platform beds or slats. As with other
Spaldin Sleep Systems mattresses, this model is covered by
