PressureGuard Easy Air Mattress

The PressureGuard Easy Air Mattress is a healthcare air mattress made by Span America and, among other distributors and dealers, sold by Tansfer Master Products, Inc. through its dealers. The Easy Air is a low air loss therapy mattress with alternating air pressure.

What is a low air loss mattress? And why is it used?

According to the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Board, Low Air Loss is "A feature of a support surface that provides a flow of air to assist in managing the heat and humidity (microclimate) of the skin." Mattresses with the Low Air Loss feature are used to treat or prevent a condition called "maceration," which is the softening of the skin by excessive moisture, such as from sweat. This is often caused by lying in one position for an extended time on a surface which does not let the skin dry out.

Air mattresses are used in healthcare primarily to treat or prevent pressure sores, which result from large bony parts of the body bearing most of the body's weight. The pressure in an air mattress can be adjusted to spread support evenly across the whole body This takes excess pressure off parts such as hips and shoulders. At the same time, the spine is supported.

Alternating pressure includes transferring higher and lower pressure among zones in the mattress. This keeps one area of the body from being tight against the mattress surface too long at one time. This helps in preventing pressure ulcers, and is important if the patient cannot be turned.

According to Transfer Master and Span America, the PressureGuard Easy Air does not lose air when it loses power. This is important when power cannot be restored quickly and no generators are available (or they fail). According to the manufacturer, the Easy Air will not "swallow up" the patient.

All PressureGuard mattresses sold by Transfer Master have Span America's Safety Edge. This edge support system is designed specifically for air beds. It keeps the edge from collapsing. This makes it easier to get a patient into and out of bed, such as when transferring to/from a wheelchair.

Two of the patented features of the PressureGuard Easy Air, besides Safety Edge, are the Air Diffusion Matrix (AFM) and PressureGuard Air Foam. AFM helps keep the pressure even, as well as helpng keep the mattress from deflating unintentionally. The PressureGuard Air Foam is to cushion the user against the hardness of the inflated air cylinders and smooth out their support.

The cover of the PressureGuard Easy Air is permeable to vapors, but not to water. Although the fiber is not named, this fits the description of high denier nylon. This cover protects the foam from being soaked while allowing some ventilation. It also makes the mattress easy to clean.

The weight limit for a PressureGuard Easy Air Mattress is 500 pounds. It is available through Transfer Master Products dealers, and is covered by Span America's 2-year non-prorated warranty against defects in materials or manufacturing.
