The Regal Superb has only one layer of pocket coils, but has the same overall height as several other Vispring mattresses with two layers. The obvious conclusion is that it has more comfort cushioning material. Vispring does describe the surfaces of this two-sided mattress as "voluptuously deep." Each side has three fiber layers with varying blends of natural materials, such as British fleece wool, Shetland Island wool, horsetail and cotton. All this is covered top and bottom and along the sides (borders) with Belgian ticking.
The single spring layer of this innerspring mattress has 1763 pocket coils in Queen size (2236 in King). These 48mm (1.88") diameter coils are nested in individual pockets in a honeycomb configuration. Pocket coils were invented for relief of pressure on large joints, such as hips and shoulders, while maintaining essential support for recessed areas, such as the lower spine.
The first comfort layer above the coils is a blend of Platinum Certified British fleece wool with cotton. It has a weight of 3.3 oz./ft2.
The primary fill is blended and teased long-strand horsetail hair and British fleece wool with a weight of 3.9 oz/ft2. Because of the horsehair, this layer is enclosed in a hair-proof cambric cover. The horsehair-wool blend supplies most of the springiness of the comfort section. Before innersprings, horsehair was the premium cushioning for mattresses.
The overlay layer is 3 oz./ft2 of Platinum Certified Shetland wool and cotton.
The default cover for the Regal Superb is Belgian ticking. According to one source it is a blend of bamboo fibers and rayon (could a dealer have misidentified rayon from bamboo?). However, the customer can choose a covering from Vispring's collection of Belgian fabrics. This would not be a production problem since each mattress is made to order.
Hand-made in England by trained and experienced British craftsmen, the Regal Superb mattress is sewn and tufted by hand.
