The Masterpiece is the top-of-the-line model of ViSpring luxury mattresses. The price for a Queen size mattress is, for now, still under $50,000. This is an extravagant item, with two layers of nested pocket coils, a cover of silk, and upholstery materials of alpaca hair, bamboo fiber, Shetland fleece wool, cotton fiber, long-stranded horsetail hair, and cashmere.
The support unit in The Masterpiece innerspring mattress is composed of two layers of individually wrapped pocket coils. The coils, made of vanadium, are only 1.93" (49 mm) wide. Nested in a honeycomb pattern, there are 2,888 (1,444 per layer) in Queen size. The smaller diameter and nested pattern provide fine-grained coverage for pressure relief and lower back support. Having two layers increases support without making the coil unit stiffer.
The comfort section (upholstery) of The Masterpiece consists of at least seven layers of varying ingredients and densities. In order, they are cashmere, alpaca, bamboo fiber, a blend of Shetland wool with cotton, Mooseburger long-stranded horsehair, Shetland wool, and the Shetland wool-cotton blend. The horsehair is hand-teased and confined in a hair-proofed fabric.
The top panel of the cover of The Masterpiece is a damask of silk. The border is almost 10" high (25 cm). It has five rows of hand stitching, with horizontal handles (8 on Queen or larger) and air vents. According to ViSpring, six hours is required for the stitching on this top-level mattress.
The sides of The Masterpiece have coir and wool upholstery (padding). Coir is coconut husk fibers bonded and coated with natural latex. This stiff material in the border serves as edge support, negating the need for foam encasement.
The entire mattress is hand-tufted. All the stitching is done by hand. In fact, the entire mattress is hand-crafted.
As to The Masterpiece Superb, this is the name used by several retailers. One refers to it as an upgrade of The Masterpiece, but I have found no indication of the differences in product descriptions.
The Masterpiece is paired with a ViSpring foundation, The Statesman Divan. This divan is a luxury box spring. The Scandinavian spruce frame is fastened with glue and screws (not nails or staples as in cheap foundations). The suspension is a double layer of nested pocket springs, with a total count of 2736 in Queen size.
The Statesman is insulated (covered on top) with wadding, and the cover is lined. The sides are upholstered with horsehair, wool and cotton. It is covered in the customer's choice of fabric. Like the mattress, this divan is hand-crafted.
The warranty is for 20 years. The Masterpiece is available through a number of North American retailers.
