The Shetland Superb by British luxury bedding manufacturer Vispring is named after its signature ingredient, Shetland wool. This wool is produced by Shetland sheep, a breed first raised in the Shetland Islands north of Scotland, which are also known for the Shetland pony. The small, hardy sheep, now raised in several countries, are prized for their fine wool.
The Shetland Superb is a basically all-wool mattress, the non-wool components being vanadium steel coil springs and their calico cotton pockets. The two layers of vanadium steel pocket springs are layered on both sides with wool cushioning, which is covered with worsted wool and tufted with woolen tufts and twine. This has earned Vispring the right to display the Woolmark emblem on The Shetland Superb. Wool wicks moisture to keep the sleeping surface dry. It is also temperature neutral, suitable for both warm and cool conditions. In addition, wool is flame resistant, meaning no chemicals are required to meet fire safety standards.
The six-turn individually wrapped coil springs and their calico pockets are nested in a hexagonal (honeycomb) pattern in two layers. This is the densest, most stable configuration for pocket coils. Each layer is bound with cording, as can be seen in the photo, to further stabilize the unit. A wool padding separates the two layers. With 1156 of 2.36" diameter coils in a layer, the mattress has a toal coil count of 2312 in a queen size bed.
The upholstery in The Shetland Superb by Vi-Spring is multiple layering of wool. The first layer is British fleece wool, softly needled to 2 ounces per square foot. Above this is Shetland fleece wool, hand teased with a weight of 3.1 ounces per square foot. The top layer is more 2 oz. British fleece wool. This is a two-sided mattress with identical upholstery on both sides.
The cover of The Shetland Superb is worsted wool upholstery fabric. The buyer has a choice of fabric pattern and color from Vispring's collection. The sides (borders) are a protective thickness of wool fabric, triple-stitched with air vents on all sides and sewn-in handles. The border is 9.1" high, and the thickness of the crowns makes this mattress about 10.5" high overall.
The paired foundation for The Shetland Superb is Vispring's Sovereign. The Sovereign is available as a 12¼" pocket sprung Divan, a 9¾" Boxbase (box spring), or a 6⅔" Shallow or 4⅔" Low-Profile base. The Sovereign has a single row of heavy-gauge pocket coils screwed to a wood frame. The coils are topped by a layer of coir and covered with wool wadding and the customer's choice of fabric. Not all box heights are available at every retailer. Some do not carry the Low-Profile.
The Shetland Superb is sold by retailers in several countries, including the United States and Canada. It is covered by a Lifetime ViSpring warranty.
