The Signatory

The Signatory is a luxury mattress made by the British bedding manufacturer, Vispring. Founded by associates of James Marshall (who founded Marshall Mattress in Canada), the inventor of pocket coils, Vispring was the first manufacturer of mattresses with wrapped pocket springs in the United Kingdom. The enhanced version, The Signatory Superb, is listed as a Paris Mansion associated mattress in the updated Vispring listing.

The heart of The Signatory mattress by Vispring is the two-layer innerspring of individually wrapped pocket coils, Made of vanadium steel, these coils are nested, the densest coil configuration, with an overall coil count of 3496 in a Queen size unit. The reason pocket coils are used in luxury mattresses is their pressure-relieving conformity. This is due to their independent response. One coil does not pull down its neighbors. This reduces pressure on larger joints, such as hips, and provides support to recessed areas, such as the lumbar.

The pockets for the almost 2" diameter springs are made of calico cotton. Each layer of coils is bound around by a cord attached to each outer row pocket. This holds the coils in place within their hexagonal honeycomb nested pattern. Coir in the borders serves as edge support.

The upholstery and covering of The Signatory and The Signatory Superb include natural ingredients such as Shetland wool, British fleece wool, cashmere, organic cotton, silk and horsetail. Cotton and Shetland wool are blended for some of the layers. Cashmere and horsetail are teased to give them body for cushioning layers. The horsetail is in a hair-proof cover. The outer layers are fleece wool and cotton.

With The Signatory Superb there is a choice of Belgian cover fabrics. These may contain cotton, wool or silk. The side panels are just over 9" high. The top adds more than an inch on each side, making this two-sided mattress about 11" to 12" high. Handles sewn onto the sides facilitate rotation and flipping for even comfort and longer life. The sides also have air vents.

The Signatory and The Signatory Supurb mattresses are built by hand by trained craftsmen, from sewing the pockets and nesting the coils to layering the upholstery, sewing the covers, and tufting the mattress with wool and cotton twine.

The foundation The Signatory is paired with is the Viceroy Divan. This is a sprung divan (box spring) with heavy duty pocket coils to both support the mattress and provide a degree of flexibility.

Several options are available with The Signatory. These include choices among toppers (4), fabrics (12) and legs (10). Other choices are among headboards (21), divan heights, and divan drawers (3). Additional options include mattress protector, mattress pad, pillows, divan dressings, and zip & link mattresses.

The Signatory and The Signatory Superb are available at several retailers in North America.
