Workbench Latex Bed

The Workbench Latex Bed is a 7" high dunlop latex mattress made for and sold by Workbench Furniture, based in Greenwich Village in New York City. Latex is known for its durability, more durable than memory foam. And dunlop process latex is also known for its firmness. The 7" Workbench Latex Bed exhibits both, with some mattresses maintaining their level of support for 30 years or more.

As with all foam mattresses, the Workbench Latex Bed works best on a foundation with consistent support across the entire mattress, such as a platform bed or European-style wood slats. It would also be compatible with an adjustable bed.

Sadly, The Workbench has been out of business for some years now. I am only posting this in hopes someone will have found a satisfactory substitute. This bed is 7 inch latex foam (presumably Dunlop -- we're talking 1968 here) on a plywood platform base and remains the most comfortable I have ever slept in. My ex-wife and I bought it as newlyweds for our first apartment. 29 years later, my second (and current) wife decided it was a little too firm for her, and we wanted a king. We ended up with a 1997 model Tempur-Pedic which wasn't quite as firm as I would have liked, but she loved it and I got used to it. It remained comfortable for 16 years before the foam started to sag. Last year we replaced it with a new Tempur-Pedic which, after only six months, has lost all support. This summer I have awakened with back pain every morning. Finally, I slept on my old Workbench bed in the guest room for two nights of blissful sleep, and my back feels fine. That's what brought me to this website. We haven't yet begun to fight with Tempur-Pedic, so I can't comment on their warranty, though what I've read online is not encouraging. But assuming we get nowhere with them, I'm hoping someone has found a sublimely comfortable latex mattress that they can recommend.
