Design Sleep

Design Sleep is a family owned and operated bedding manufacturer in Yellow Springs, Ohio, on US 68 southwest of Springfield, OH. The president/manager is Mike Koveleski. A graduate of the Industrial Design Program at the Pratt Institute, he started a business in 1990, making platform beds in New York City for Scott Jordan Furniture (one of the retailers for European Sleep Works and Prana Sleep).

While making these beds, his passion for design led Mike to begin researching mattress design and quality. He and his wife attended furniture shows, including in Europe. There they found a different approach to mattress and foundation design. The common foundation in the United States and Canada at that time was box springs, and most beds had innerspring mattresses supported by open coils (Bonnell, offset and continuous). Meanwhile, in Europe non-coil and wrapped pocket coil mattresses predominated. And the preferred foundation was an array of adjustable wood slats, such as those sold by European Sleep Works.

Not long after, Koveleski developed a line of latex mattresses and opened a showroom in the Soho District. Mike says, "Our mattresses were outperforming conventional American bedding by at least 50% in 5 critical features."

"Five children later," Mike & family moved to Yellow Springs, Ohio, and started Design Sleep. Why the move? They were looking for a better place to raise their children and wanted to be close to church friends in nearby Springfield. Their goal was to be the best source in Ohio for quality, healthy beds: latex foam, organic materials, custom European designs, and . . . platform beds. Some of the organic materials are Merina wool, organic cotton, and 100% natural Talalay latex.

The Design Sleep website outlines and details a lot of information and explanations about their products, concepts, materials, and sleep in general. The website also has well-produced videos, including two features by Dayton area TV stations.

The list of Design Sleep products includes My Side/Your Side Custom Mattresses, Organic, chemically-safe Mattresses, Natural Latex Foam Mattresses, European Sleep Systems, European Adjustable Beds, Ergonomic Home Seating, Solid Wood Platform Beds, and Handcrafted American Bedroom Furniture, as well as bedding (Oxygen Pillow, Natural Pillows, Pillow Tops, Breathable Bedding, Sheets) and other furniture (Ergonomic Recliners and Sofa Sleepers). They also sell two adjustable beds (which they do not make), the Legra European Adjustable Bed and the Leggett & Platt S-Cape.

    

The mattress series produced by Design Sleep are arranged by choices: Simple Choices (Design Sleep Universal Classics) with three models (100% Natural 7-Zone Latex, Riviera, New Paris), Alternative Choices (Design Sleep European Luxury) with five models (LuxSweden, Scandinavia, Provence, Venice, Sweden), and Younger Affordable Choices (Healthy Beginnings) with five models (Healthy Baby, Healthy Toddler, Healthy Kids, Healthy Latex, Healthy Youth). All mattresses can be zipped open — "Open means nothing to hide!"

The delivery area for Dream Sleep includes Southwest Ohio, and it extends east to the Columbus area, west into Indiana and south into Kentucky.
