Organic Wool Pillow

wool-2-a

Berkeley Ergonomics currently makes three pillows: the Plein Air Latex Pillow, the Gümmi Pillow, and the Organic Wool Pillow.

The Organic Wool Pillow by Berkeley Ergonomics (BE) is a product I'm personally acquainted with. We bought a pair of them, Travel Size, at the Design Sleep store in Yellow Springs. Mine is nice on top of the large firm bed pillow for cushioning my head. There have been no allergy problems.

The core of the Organic Wool Pillow is pellets of organic wool, BE's Plein-Air-Wool®. Wool, of course, is a natural product. Organic wool is from sheep that have been raised without chemical dips and grazed in organic pastures. And the sheared wool was not treated with chemicals, but washed with soap and water. That is what is required for wool to be certified as organic.

Wool is supportive, breathable and temperature neutral. The type of wool used in the Plein-Air-Wool® depends on the breed of sheep. This wool has a "strong natural curl." This makes it more resilient. It does keep its shape and bounces back after use. I know.

Most people are familiar with wool keeping them warm in the winter by insulation. Wool can also keep a person cool when the room is hot. How? It controls humidity by wicking moisture, up to as much as ⅓ the weight of the wool. This moisture then evaporates, and the evaporation cools. Also, insulation works both ways, not only keeping heat in, but keeping it out.

Another advantage of wool's drawing out moisture is that this discourages dust mites, who need moisture. It also dampens allergies. This is partly due to fewer dust mites, since they carry many allergens.

The cover of Berkeley Ergonomics' Organic Wool Pillow is made of organic cotton. Being organic means that the user does not have to be concerned about harmful chemicals. The cover has a nylon zipper across the end. The cover can be removed, machine washed in cold water, and tumble dried.

The Organic Wool Pillow is available in three sizes. The Standard size is 20" wide by 25" long. Queen size is 20"x29", and the Child or Travel size is 20"x12". Each size has two firmness options. You can adjust the firmness of your Organic Wool Pillow. Adding wool pellets makes it firmer, and taking some out makes it less firm.

Most of the retailers who carry the Organic Wool Pillow also sell other Berkeley Ergonomics products, such as mattresses and comforters. I did not find a listed warranty for this pillow, but similar items are usually covered for two to five years.
