At 11½" high, Astoria is the highest memory foam mattress in the Premier Collection by Christeli. The other models in this collection are Stockholm and Versailles. Like Versailles, Astoria's cover fabric is infused with aloe vera. Unlike the other two models, the firmness of Astoria's Ortho-Core-Support is adjustable. Also, Astoria is tufted with Cool Tufting™ fibers.
Although Christeli compares their mattresses in general to those offered by Tempur-Pedic, they are not model-for-model equivalent. The Christeli memory foam mattresses have distinct features which set them apart. The comparison does show equivalent feel and quality for a much lower price, and made in this country. Astoria is the same height as the TEMPUR-Cloud Supreme and has similar construction, but the Christeli mattress has a cover infused with Aloe Vera (which is why it is not washable), and has a 5-zoned support core.
The support unit of Astoria is Christeli's Ortho-Core Support with Body5 zoning, which varies the support level for the head, upper body, middle body, lower body and feet. This support configuration is designed to keep the spine properly aligned, even for side sleepers. The polyurethane foam is partly soy-based, reducing dependence on petroleum and emissions of volatile organic compounds.
Rather than a single block of polyurethane foam, the 2-lb. Ortho support core has thinner layers at the top and bottom. According to Christeli, "With an easy turn of the base you can adjust the Astoria mattress to be firmer or softer." How is this done? The comfort layer is in a European box top, which is fastened to the support core by the handles. This allows the base to be rotated in relation to the top. Besides adjustment of firmness, rotation also prolongs the life of the foams.
The comfort core of Astoria is a single 3" layer of Super Cool Memory Foam. Thhis 5.3-lb. memory foam is ventilated for airflow to keep the mattress surface both cool and dry. Originally developed by NASA for astronauts at launch, memory foam cushions and cradles the user by conforming to body contours.
The tack-and-jump quilted cover of Astoria is infused with aloe vera. The aloe gel is microencapsulated, so that sleepers' body heat causes minute amounts to be released during the night, rising through the sheets to soothe the skin. This also gives the mattress a silky feel.
Astoria uses Cool Tufting fibers in tufting the comfort core to further cool the mattress while maintaining the integrity of this section.
Among the listed benefits of the Astoria memory foam mattress is being anti-mite and anti-allergy. Other benifits include those related to the support: pressure relief, spinal support and alignment, reduction of joint pain and enhanced blood circulation. Christeli says these reduce tossing and turning, which means better quality of sleep leading to better waking hours.
