The Palais Grand Royale, introduced in January 2013 as Christeli's signature luxury model, is the highest memory foam mattress in the Ultra Luxury Collection, as well as the highest overall of Christeli's mattresses. It compares with the GrandBed by Tempur-Pedic. Unlike the other models, the Palais Grand Royale is a two-sided mattress with one side firm and the other medium plush. In addition these firmness levels can be adjusted by turning over the support core.
The cover of Palais Grand Royale, like those of the other Ultra Luxury Collection models, is cashmere fabric quilted with Cool Tufting fibers. Cashmere, like wool, is temperature neutral. It also wicks away moisture from the sleeping surface. Christeli states that cashmere "keeps you cool and dry in the summer and cozy in the winter." The Cool Tufting is quilting fibers, airy with airflow for cooling.
While the other two Ultra Luxury Collection models, Charleston and Lux Estate, have two comfort layers, Palais Grand Royale has three. Like the others, two are in the European box top. Palais Grand Royale has 1" of 6-lb. Super Cool™ Memory Foam (the others have 2") and 4" of 5.3-lb. Super Cool. The heavier memory foam is on top where, according to Christeli, it provides "more exacting countour[ing] and pressure free sleep." The lighter foam in the next layer provides plushness. Both layers are ventilated for cooling airflow.
The third comfort layer of the Christeli Palais Grand Royale memory foam mattress is on the bottom in its own detachable section. This is 3" of 5.3-lb. ventilated Super Cool. Turning the mattress over makes this a pillow top for a firmer feel.
The support core of the Palais Grand Royale is about 7" of 100% natural latex foam. Latex is highly resilient, described by some as "pushing back" on the sleeper. At the same time, it is contouring, but without the short-term "memory" of memory foam. Latex is also anti-microbial, anti-fungal and hypoallergenic. It usually does not trigger latex allergies, since it is thoroughly rinsed at the end of the curing process, washing out the allegenic proteins. This foam, like the others in this model, is ventilated.
The latex support core is encased with foam as perimeter support for the latex and edge support for the sleeping surface. Christeli says that this adds 25% to the area of the sleeping surface. Edge support does help prevent roll-offs from a sinking edge. It also makes sitting on the edge feasible.
The double-layer European box top and the single-layer pillow top are fastened to the support core, one on the top and the other on the bottom, by the lift handles on the sides. These are straps passed through loops on the support core unit and buttoned down (see illustration). By unbuttoning the handles, the box top can be lifted off the support core and the support core off the pillow top. Then the support core can be flipped to change the firmness. This is in addition to flipping the enitre mattress. The pillow top is firmer than the European box top. This means that the Palais Grand Royale has four possible firmness levels from firm to plush (or medium firm to medium plush), depending on which side is up and which way the support unit is turned.
Foundations compatible with the Palais Grand Royale have a flat, firm surface. Those meeting this requirement are platforms and adjustable beds, as well as wood slats and steel foundations with the slats and support bars no more than 4" apart. Some quaifying foundations are called box springs, but are really platforms with solid tops or closely-spaced slats (retailers still refer to them as box springs from the time when box springs were the default foundations). Christeli sells the all-steel Christeli Foundation and three adjustable bases (Ergomatic 5000, Ergomatic 4000 and Ergomatic 1000).

We purchased three Christeli Mattresses and adjustable bases and received them in November. The Madeline brand was perfect for my disabled mother, however, my husband and I ordered the Palais Grand Royale series and are very unhappy with how hard it is for us to sleep upon. It is entirely too hard for us to rest at all. It's like a slab of concrete and every pressure point is irritated. The worst sleep my husband and I have ever had is on these horrific mattresses. We phoned and asked what to do to make the bed more comfortable. They gave us some options on how to make the mattress softer and to give it time. We phoned many times complaining that the bed was far too hard for us to sleep on and we were waking up with extreme aches and pains along with pressure point issues. We kept being put off and told to try this and try that and above all give it time to adjust to the bed. I finally told them that they needed to step up with a solution for this issue. We were put off until the time frame for returns, exchanges, etc. ran out. Just today, I was told there was nothing they could do. That is a $5000+ dollar expense that most people can't easily absorb. They are all smiles and help when you're buying the product but far from helpful when you need assistance with the product. In fact, I was told that this has never happened, especially with their Palais Grand Royale. I was very much "blown off" and dismissed. Very unprofessional of them. I cannot in good faith recommend anyone purchase any product from this company. In fact, I now have a useless product that I can't use because it's too painful to sleep on this piece of concrete slab they call a high end mattress. I have to purchase an entire new bed and throw the Christeli Palais Grand Royale two twin xl mattresses in the dumpster. What a true travesty.
