We at Beds.Org have reviewed a few of the new online-only mattresses shipped in a box, and we are planning to review a few more. With the exception of BedInABox, most of these are manufactured by or for very recent companies. BedInABox has seven models, but for most of these, one or two models is their entire mattress offering. Already reviewed are BedInABox, Casper Sleep, Leesa Sleep, Loom & Leaf Brand (by Saatva), Lull, Novosbed, Tuft & Needle, and Yogabed. Mattress-in-a-box companies soon to be reviewed are Purple Mattress, Ghost Bed, Dream Bed, and Helix Sleep.
In a move recalling the title of the Star Wars sequel The Empire Strikes Back, a major bedding corporation Tempur-Sealy (T-S) now has its own mattress-in-a-box sold only online, Cocoon by Sealy. In an ironic twist of timing, T-S announced the new brand a day after the posting of a Wall Street Journal article, "Bed-in-a-Box Startups Challenge Traditional Mattress Makers." Extremely ironic, since Sealy took more than a year developing the new offering.
Cocoon is a 10" high memory foam mattress. This is what we naturally expect from Tempur-Pedic, but don't forget that Sealy has the Optimum brand of memory foam, gel memory foam, and latex mattresses.
Many of the start-ups offer only one firmness level, somewhere in the middle, appealing to the average preference. A few offer a choice of two comfort levels, and this is the route Sealy takes. Sealy cites its own experience in designing and selling mattresses, knowing that people have differing preferences in the firmness of their sleeping surfaces. The choices for the Cocoon are two, Firm and Soft. Developers at Sealy thought more choices could become confusing.
The Firm has two layers, a very firm base layer (support core) and a firm memory foam comfort layer. The Soft has three layers. The base layer is still very firm, but the firm memory foam layer is not as high, and a third layer of soft memory foam is on top.
The mattress cover cannot be removed for washing, but it can be spot cleaned.
The Cocoon is sold only online, but Sealy is offering an under $1,000 mattress deal to its retailers. This means that the Cocoon is not itself sold at lower prices, but that the savings is extending to in-store customers too.
The Cocoon by Sealy is covered by a the standard Tempur-Sealy 10-year limited warranty. There is also a 100-night trial period.
