The five models in the Design Sleep European Luxury Series are listed as Alternative Choices, a step above the Simple Choices of the Universal Classics Series. The five models are, in order of price, Provence, LuxSweden, Scandinavia, Venice, and Sweden. All models are innerspring mattresses with various versions of pocket coils: some Swedish, some German. Three of the models also have minicoils or microcoils, and one model (Provence) has a triple-coil design.
Each European Luxury mattress has a cover of knit organic cotton. Knit fabric is more stretchable than woven material, comforming better to bodies impressing the mattress. The cover is lined with wool, which is breathable, temperature neutral, and moisture wicking. Compressed wool batting is also naturally flame resistant, meeting federal standards for bedding flammability without the use of chemicals. In the Provence, camel hair is mixed in with the wool to enhance control of moisture and temperature.
The mattresses in the European Luxury Series each have latex foam, just 100% natural latex made from rubber tree sap–no synthetic latex, no polyurethane mixed in, nor fillers (such as silica and/or silicone). This foam is aerated (ventilated) to enhance air flow for coolnes and humidity control.
All mattresses in the European Luxury Collection are dual-sided, meaning the firmness for each side can be made for the person sleeping on that side.
Provence is the top Design Sleep European Luxury model. Though the actual height of the mattress is not given, it is apparently the highest. This mattress has three sets of coils, with a total coil count of 3,000 plus. The top set is a layer of Swedish stretch pocket coils (shorter and wider than standard coils). These coils are "hyper-compressed" for enhanced support. The stretch coils are separated from the middle coil set by a ¾" layer of latex for added cushioning.
The middle coil set is a layer of German minicoils with a coil count of 1,500. The height of the mini-coils is not given here, but the microcoils in the New Paris are 2" tall. Here I am not sure whether a distinction is being made between micro-coils and mini-coils. These coils rest on 1" layer of latex.
The base set of coils in the European Luxury Provence mattress is nested pre-compressed Swedish pocket coils. These are described as highly flexible." Though not identified, there must be some kind of base pad. Since the liner inside the cover is wool, this is the most likely candidate.
Lux Sweden, the second-to-the-top model in the European Luxury Series by Design Sleep, is a double-coil mattress. The base layer of 736 pocket coils (Queen size) is topped by 875 micro-coils with a layer of latex between. The coils in both layers are highly compressed to provide horizontal stability. The cutaway view of the Lux Sweden appears to show full encasement–if so, it would be latex.
Design Sleep says that the use of two sets of compressed coils with natural latex and wool preserves the bouyancy of the mattress without sagging or body impressions, unlike mattresses using polyurethane foams or polyester fibers.
The "middle child" of the Design Sleep European Luxury Series is Scandinavia. And like a middle child, it does not get the same amount of attention as the others–the descripton is short. Like Lux Sweden, Scandinavia has a double-coil design: 900 micro-coils above 800 base pocket coils. In combination with natural latex layers, a wool liner and an organic cotton knit cover, there are four firmness options for each side of this dual-comfort mattress.
The Venice is described as having "A luxurious floating feel that contours to fit your body" This is credited to the German pocket coils (1,500 in a Queen-sized mattress), coupled with natural latex foam and a stretch-knit organic cotton cover with a wool lining. According to Design Sleep, "It is gentle like an all latex mattress with the lifting qualities of a spring mattress, so this is a great bed for those who like both."
The individually encased pocket coils are made of high carbon steel. They are densely nested, allowing the lighter-gauge springs to be softer and fully supportive at the same time (the description indicates overlapping coils).
The latex layer is 2" high for extra cushioning. Four firmness levels are available for both sides of the bed for dual comfort.
The Sweden is the simplest of the European Luxury models, with an 800-count innerspring of pocket coils (highly compressed) and a 2" layer of all-naural Talalay latex, wrapped in an organic cotton stretch-knit cover quilted to an organic Merino wool liner. The high-carbon coils are made in Sweden.
Like the mattresses in the Design Sleep Universal Classics Series, those in the European Luxury Series are paired with an adjustable firmness European wood slat foundation. They are also compatible with certain other foundations, such as adjustable beds, such as the Legra European Adjustable Bed, with a slatted surface, and the S-Cape made by Leggett & Platt. They can be used on platform beds, but it is advisable to have a slatted frame on top of this bed. Traditional box springs are not advisable.
Available for delivery in SW Ohio, European Luxury Series mattresses are covered by a Design Sleep 10-year warranty.
