Design Sleep Universal Classics Series

The Universal Classics Series of mattresses by Design Sleep is listed under the first set of choices for Design Sleep products: Simple Choices. One of the three models (100% Natural 7-zone Latex) is all-latex, one (Riviera) has a single layer of over a thousand pocket coils, and one (New Paris) has pocket coils, and adds a layer of micro-coils while the main coils are precompressed.

All three models feature top comfort layers of latex foam. This is 100% natural latex (made from rubber tree sap). The latex foam is made in the Netherlands (Holland) with no fillers, such as silica.

All Universal Classic mattresses also feature stretch fabric made from organic cotton in the cover and organic wool (merino wool for New Paris) in the lining. The wool is temperature neutral and controls moisture. It is also flame resistant, negating the need for chemical fire retardants to comply with federal flammability standards.

Design Sleep marks these models, as well as all their mattresses, as ecologically healthy. The latex foam does not have the outgassing which marks synthetic foams, especially those in the polyurethane family.

100% Natural 7-Zone Latex
Natural Latex Classic

This is an all-latex mattress. Except for the cover and lining, it is a block of latex foam. As can be seen in the cutaway view above, the foam is perforated to let air flow through and moisture to escape. The ventilation helps keep the sleeping surface cool and dry. It also deters moisture from accumulating in the foam. This prevents deterioration of the foam and keeps mold and bacteria from growing.

Latex is naturally resilient (remember that latex foam is also called foam rubber). It gently lifts the sleeper, and its support is smoother than metal springs.

According to Mike Koveleski, this model, nicknamed the "Seven Zone," is inspired by the mattresses they found at European furniture shows. He says, "This was the experience that turned me from a furniture designer/builder to a mattress geek." This is an ergonomic design. The firmness of the latex core varies through seven zones, corresponding to areas of the body.

Also available from Design Sleep is a non-zoned Natural Latex Classic mattress.

Riviera
Riviera

The Riviera is an innerspring mattress with German-made wrapped pocket coils. These tall, narrow springs number 1,103 im a queen-size mattress. The chief advantage of pocket coils is their comformity, which evenly distributes support along the entire body, relieving pressure on hips and shoulders while supporting the spine. Pocket coils also do not transfer motion from one side of the mattress to the other.

Targeted Support & Pressure Relief

The customer can choose from four firmness levels in the Riviera. This model is also an example of the My Side/Your Side Custom Mattress concept of dual comfort. The firmness level can be selected for each side of a queen-size or larger mattress.

New Paris
NewParis

Design Sleep's New Paris mattress is billed as, "Luxurious European support meets classic American feel." This model is distinguished from the Riviera principally by the coils. The primary springs are 945 (in queen) Swedish coils (about 6" high) for the support. These are precompressed. This innerspring is topped with a layer of 1,500 microcoils (only 2" high) for cushioning. Then the mattress is topped with a layer of ventilated latex foam, the merino wool lining, and the organic cotton cover.

Like Riviera, New Paris is a dual comfort mattress with a choice of four firmness levels.

European Wood Slat Foundation
European_Sleep_System

All Universal Classic mattresses by Design Sleep are made to work with a European wood slat foundation. Closely-spaced slats of resilient wood are used instead of the metal springs used in an American box spring. Beech wood, which is used for the slats in this, is springy, like the wood in a bow.

Pairs of slats have sliding adjustment spacers. When these are out toward the ends of the slats, the support is less firm. When they meet in the middle, the support is most firm. Which pairs are firmer and by how much is selected according to the intended sleeper's body shape and size, as well as other support needs. Like the dual comfort mattresses, the two sides of the slat foundation can be adjusted separately. Universal Classic mattresses can also be used with a motorized adjustable bed, such as the Legra European Adjustable Bed with slats instead of a flat surface.
