Nordic HDM

The Nordic HDM by European Sleep Works is the successor to their Nordic and Nordic II models. The Nordic HDM has three layers of coils and two layers of Talalay latex. It is like ESW's Calico HDM and Berkeley Ergonomics Triple-Coil Model in construction, but the latter two have more base coils and minicoils.

Customers who have bought the Nordic models, including the Nordic HDM, have given them generally high ratings, even on sites known for "grouch reviews." At least one high-end bed & breakfast inn advertises that it has European Sleep Works mattresses. One suite has a King size Nordic HDM, and another has a Queen size and a Full size Alpine HDM.

Each of the three sets of coils in the Nordic HDM innerspring mattress has a different kind of pocket coils. At the bottom of the mattress are 1,200 European base coils in the support core of a Queen size mattress. Atop the support core are 800 minicoils, about half the height of the base coils. Between the two latex layers is a sheet of 2,000 High Definition Microcoils (HDM).

The base coils in the support core are nested. This honeycomb pattern maximizes the coil density for that coil diameter. This optimizes the response of the individual coils with finer conformity for better pressure relief and lower back support. Pocket coils also neutralize motion transfer, so that one sleeper moving does not disturb the other.

The minicoils are not as firm as the base coils. This is supposed to make a softer feel with less pressure. ESW says they "provide bouyancy."

The HD microcoils are the smallest ones, only a fraction of an inch high (less than the coil diameter). According to ESW, they "increase elasticity and contour while enhancing airflow and durability."

The two all-natural Talalay latex layers in the Nordic HDM are each 1" high. One is between the microcoils and the minicoils, and the other is just beneath the cover. Latex is very resilient (it is also called "rubber"). Talalay latex is processed with vertical pores for ventilation and cooling. It is also dust mite resistant and anti-microbial. The firmness of the latex in these layers can be selected to bring the mattress to the customer's choice of overall firmness.

The latex is only one of the natural materials used in the Nordic HDM. The others are organic cotton and Merino wool. Another natural material, wood, is used in the Flexible Slat System.

The cover of the Nordic HDM is stretch-knit fabric of organic cotton. The knit conforms with the sleeper to minimize bridging and bunching. This cover fabric is quilted to Merino wool with a cotton backing. The wool channels moisture away from the sleeping surface to keep it dry. It also keeps the temperature even and is breathable. Merino wool is also used as a flame resistant barrier, so no toxic chemicals are used.

The recommended foundation for the Nordic HDM is the Flexible Slat System by European Sleep Works. This European slat base has adjustable slats. The firmness of certain slats on each side of the frame can be set to customize support for each of two sleepers. This also coordinates with the firmness of the mattress selected by the customer(s). The mattress can also be used on an adjustable bed, such as the one with a slatted surface. Other foundations include fixed slat frames, solid-top box bases and platform beds.

The warranty on the European Sleep Works Nordic HDM is for 10 years.
