iZone Z1

izone_logo

Z1 is the lowest mattress of the three current iZone Beds. It is only 8" high, while the Z2 and Z3 are 10" and 12" high. The Z1 has the same basic configuration as the other two models, but with differences in heights and in the composition of the memory foam comfort layer. All of these are hybrid specialty sleep mattresses with three support components in the support core: polyurethane, latex and water. Essentially, this is a hybrid of a latex mattress with a waterbed and a memory foam mattress.

The lower level of the two-layer support core in the iZone Z1 has 3½" of polyurethane base foam. The upper level has 3½" of latex support foam.

seven_reasons

The latex layer has oval cavities for the water-filled calibrators, seven on each side of the mattress. These are called "calibrators" because they are used to adjust the level and shape of the support for each of two sleepers. Each calibrator is a PVC cylinder which can be filled with water. The more water in the cylinder, the firmer it is. Markings on the calibrator tell the user what the firmness level is for that amount of water in the tube.

The calibrators are also used for temperature regulation. Channels on top of each cavity let air flow through to contact the calibrator inside. Since the water is more conservative with temperature, it will cool warm air and warm up cold air. This is similar to the function of phase change materials.

In the Z1, these are free-flow water tubes with no baffles, fiber or foam to slow down or stop the wave action (see how this works in waterbeds).

The comfort layer in the Z1 is a 1" thick sheet of ventilated memory foam. Memory foam is selected for its pressure-relieving conformity. The ventilation pores let air flow through.

The memory foam is topped by an anti-bacterial cover. This can be removed and washed.

The cover of the mattress is also removeable and washable. This is in line with the value that parent company Boyd Specialty Sleep places on hygiene and cleanliness.

The iZone Z1 is carried by The Bedroom Store with six locations in the St. Louis area. It is also available directly from iZone online. It has a 90-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.
