Sleep Number SleepIQ Kids Beds

For Sleep Number, "kids' stuff" is a high-tech enterprise. The Sleep Number adjustable air beds for kids feature SleepIQ, the digital sleep tracking and bed adjustment system that competes with ICON's iFit Sleep System, which is now used by Customatic Adjustable Bedz. the SleepIQ for Kids Beds are k1 (ages 4-14) and k2 (for ages 10 and up).

The leading tag line for SleepIQ for Kids (there are several tag lines) is, "The only bed that grows with them and smart bedding for smart kids." This is explained by, "Discover the first kid's bed that adjusts to their comfort as they grow. Exclusive kids' bedding keeps them tucked in and snug–in colors they'll love!"

Another tag line is, "Know how you're sleeping... and how they slept." The monitoring data, settings and controls are in an app on the parents' computer or mobile device. It connects via WiFi, since that has broader bandwidth than Bluetooth.

The SleepIQ for Kids app has several features in addition to those for adults. It is the parents who learn how their children are sleeping and adjust settings to help them get their much needed rest. The app reveals whether the child is sleeping soundly, is restless, or has gotten out of bed. The mattress can be made firmer or softer, as can adult beds. Added to these are features just for kids: alerts, under-bed lights, remote lighting, star rewards, and the monster detector.

This is the "Santa Claus" feature. It knows when the child is sleeping. It knows when the child is awake. This does not simply show on Dad's or Mom's smart phone or tablet. It actually gives an alert, waking up the parent when Junior is restless, or when Daisy gets up. The firmness of the bed can be adjusted. The head can be raised for better breathing. Mom can get up to check on Daisy, make sure she's OK.

Underbed Lighting

It's the wee hours. Junior gets up for an urgent need. As soon as he gets out of his k2 bed, SleepIQ turns on a light under the bed, enabling him to safely go from bed to the bedroom door, then back again.

Remote Lighting

The kids are still awake when they should be asleep. Dad does not have to go down the hall or climb the stairs to turn the lights off. He just touches the "button" for lights out. If the lights are set on low so Junior can get to sleep, they can be turned off when he is sleeping soundly. This can be automated, or Mom can do it.

Star rewards

A long-standing reward system for good behavior and accomplishments has been star stickers on a chart. The SleepIQ for Kids has a star reward system, awarding stars for good sleep habits, such as getting into bed on time.

Monster detector

"There's a monster in the closet!" or "I think a monster is under the bed." Many parents deal with bedtime boogymen of one sort or another. I don't know exactly how it works (those who attended the CES Show in January 2015 saw a demonstration), but with this SleepIQ for Kids app, a parent can search for monsters with a child, assuring the kid that there are no monsters in the room - at least for now.

The colors of the SleepIQ for Kids Beds are selected to be appealing to children: lime, blue and red. Since they are designed for lighter weight users, they are only 8" high, with smaller air chambers and lighter padding. The soft cover is woven.

This bed is designed to grow with the kids. Some of the features will become "just kid's stuff" to the child as he or she grows older. The child will learn to monitor sleep and make adjustment as time goes on, so when they are big enough for an adult size bed, they can manage the system.

Primarily sold directly from Select Comfort, the SleepIQ for Kids Beds may be bought at a reduced price when purchased with an adult bed, putting the whole family in the package.

All Sleep Number beds are covered by Select Comfort's 2-20-25 warranty: 2 years full coverage, years 3-20 prorated, years 21-25 96% coverage.
