Historically, waterbeds were introduced between innerspring mattresses and memory foam mattresses. Innersprings were invented in the late 1800s when Bonnell cois were adapted from buggy seat springs. Memory foam was developed from the original NASA pressure relief material and memory foam mattresses were successfully marketed by Tempur-Pedic in 1991. Meanwhile, waterbeds were first marketed in 1971, and they quickly became popular.
At the peak of waterbed market share in 1987, there were many manufacturers of waterbeds. The popularity of waterbeds has declined since the the introduction of memory foam, but they still have a solid place in mattress sales. Understandably, the number of waterbed manufacturers has dwindled, both be attrition and by consolidation. Eight of the remaining waterbed manufacturers are covered on Beds.Org. They are:
American National Manufacturing
Boyd Specialty Sleep
Classic Brands
Innomax Corporation
Sterling Sleep Systems
Strobel Organic Mattresses
United States Watermattress
